Winter Project

very nice!!

+1

Can’t wait to see it with the gold foil.

Cheers for that guys, I wasn’t expecting it to come back looking half as good as it does, so really pleased with it myself. Shame they are bonded in place on the road cars as it would be a nice touch on all of them…

I think I’m going to approach the foil application in a slightly differently manner to how I have seen it done before.

There are so many different surface areas on the panel with very tight bends and awkward corners leading on to them, it’s going to be very difficult to cover it 100% and keep it all looking neat and tidy. The foils basic function is to reflect heat back into the engine bay and keep it away from the passenger cockpit, it isn’t a fireproof material so I’m thinking 90-95% coverage should be more than adequate for what I’m asking of it.

I’ll be looking to do it like they do the decals on the bodywork of go-karts. Rather than fighting the curves and bends they have various different sections that cover the main surface areas but have purposefully left gaps between them on the corners. So long as I get the spacing right it should look stunning… (black and gold, how can i go wrong?)

Silly question but if you used gold leaf would you be able to get the compound angles better?

Assuming leaf would do the job?

If I had a ‘HRH’ in front of my name then perhaps…

[quote=TarmacTerrorist]GT3 front crash structure which orientates the radiator(s) to an inclined 45 degree angle for better cooling, it also gives a much stronger fixing point for splitters etc. I’m not looking forward to removing the old one…

With this GT3 crash box, does it use the same radiator and fans? Was it ordered from Lotus?

To be fair if Lotus don’t have stock or want to supply one, it looks from the pictures to be a pretty simple thing to fabricate. We use a laser cutters that can cut and fold the individual pieces and have a local ally welder that could tig them all together.

Gav, you interested in having a few made, just in case you damage yours at some stage?

I thought it looked fairly simple to copy…for someone far better skilled than me!

Does the front tow brace still bolt into the front structure with this GT3 box?

I should have perhaps made this a bit clearer at the start …

The aluminium GT3 front crash structure is totally NOT a road legal part!! For anything other than a track car I wouldn’t have bothered, nor would I advise anyone else to even consider it. Have an accident with it on and you could be well and truly up poo alley.

Lotus Motorsport had these one-off parts made for the gt3 race cars a couple of years ago. I can assure you they will have absolutely no interest in supplying or making anymore as the program has completey finished and any remaining cars, spares and parts have long since gone…

I’ve already taken all the measurements off it Sean have no fear.

You should deffo get some made Gav. As long as people know the score with what you have stated above, then that is fine.

Yes and no, what you see in the pics is not the complete front end setup. There is still a front section to bolt on and there is also a top cowling to direct the airflow out.

The front tow eye attaches to the section you don’t see yet. The factory made both the front and top out of f/glass. I’m probably going to make the front out of Ali sheet and the top out of f/glass on mine.

Is it the crazy angle of the wing mirror?

Or the exhaust exit is on the wrong side?
