Stripped 3rd gear!

No idea through Craners I was too scared, Pete what gear was I in and how fast was I going?

At the risk of getting a beating from JSRacing guy’s.

Quaife have released details of their 6 speed sequential box for the yota engine Exige, although when i asked for details of what torque etc would the box take I was directed to Benjamin at LIR-Racing (www.lir-racing.com) yes a French outfit

It’s a lot cheaper than the Lotus offering,

Sadly I suspect it will not be very practical as any form of road car :frowning:
The gear ratios are interesting though
Overall Speed 8000RPM
Gear MPH KPH
1st 43,41 70,34
2nd 62,17 100,07
3rd 81,60 131,34
4th 102,22 164,54
5th 122,40 197,01
6th 146,24 235,39
But it is @6100 plus the shifter at @572 plus taxes, still not cheap at all :frowning:

Seriously guys crank up the power add a E153 gearbox and kick ass…
Shifting is highly over rated… Tall gears and the torque to use them is the only real answer…

Benjamin has got back to me and quotes the following;

max torque 32m/KG
300bhp

Not sure what the max torgue is in lb/s if someone can tell what 32m/KG is in old money, 300bhp is not enough for some of you high performance guys!

It looks to be about 231lb/f

No good for me then…

What torque figure do you have now then?

Darryl, you wont get a beating from us, quite the opposite, the more options the better.

Close gears are deffo the way to go, I run 2 different 5 speed transmissions in my Audi car, one tops out at 187, the other at 158.

The car feels awesome with the long (187mph) box in, but is truly on another planet with the short one installed.

I would run the short box all of the time, but a tracks like Spa and Snett I would simply run out of gears.

The Quaife sequential box looks like relatively good value for a sequential. It’s an excellent option to keep the yota in the power band. It would really help my car be more class competitive. I hope Quaife have sorted the sequentials now to the same high standard as their dog boxes as I did hear negative vibes about the early ones in Escorts.

The downside is that value for money wise its probably possible to do a DIY Audi full conversion for similar money. Hard to justify the Quaife on bang per buck.

Then again if I had the budget it would be an Audi with a SADEV

We’ve gone through don’t know how many C64 boxes in our 2-eleven, various Exiges and Elise R race cars. Bottom line is the whole gearbox package is no good in a track environment. We put a fresh box in for the Brands 1000k race and ran it on Motul Gearcomp 75/140 and it lasted but was starting to crunch into 4th. This was totally standard, we also switched back to standard mounts and run without a rear diffuser to aid cooling.

If you change the gears you tend to just move the problem elsewhere. There are a few options coming out, Quaiffe which I’d like to see proven longer term. A Honda conversion will be out soon, that will be the most reliable and cost effective long term solution, also coming is a high end sequential to rival the Sadev but at a lower cost which is what we’re going to run in Lotus Cup UK next season as well as Britcar and Dubai 24 hour races.

If you carry on with a C64 then Motul 75/140 Gearcomp helps.

Great info … cheers . I,m also thinking just changing 3rd gear is a bodge…
Time will tell if the quite is a viable alternative

Why not run a proper gear oil cooler then rather than no diffuser? The JSR setup has transformed the amount of heat in my gearbox, also have you tried the Jubu gears yet? did they survive any longer?

Details please Ade!

Mine is made using a laminova oil cooler in the return to the engine from the rad, the oil feed comes from the drain hole and the return is back into the top up hole, I am using a pump from the USA that is an electric version of a geared oil pump which is supposed to be ultra reliable, however JSR fitted it with a switch in the boot so it is only when I want it to be, I have noticed a 2 degree climb in the engine temp to 96 on track during 25 minute sessions at Spa
John custom made all the brackets lines and electrics and could easily now repeat it, total cost of bits was ~500 I think, maybe less.

PS I can now touch the gearbox after a session without 3rd degree burns

Combined engine & gearbox laminova solution as well. The no diffuser thing was just to help as much as possible. The other factor was that we’d collect less gravel if someone had an off.

For 2011 eliseparts will be selling the Honda gearbox conversion…

Does look interesting, but you have to wonder how much it will be? also how good are the ratios?

Ratios are spot on!

Just trying to find how much…

I’ve tansmission solutions lined up to rebuild my box with Jubus, but I’m just holding back until I know more. I expect it will be expensiv though.
