Guess that depends what sort of BHP/torque you will push out of the Yota… I think some of the higher powered Honda converted cars are pushing the limits of that gearbox now.
I still think the only way to go if you are going to change is the Audi box, if the ratios are a bit tall add more power to the engine
John has done a spreadsheet with all of the Audi ratios, I think he was going to post it as there is deffo a box with the right ratios.
One of the SC’d race cars John runs has bust the standard honda box, and they are not that easy to get hold of at reasonable money.
40 1st
75 2nd
95 3rd
110 4th
125 5th
150 6th
I’d like to see ratios giving a spread something like this @8200rpm? Could suffer a shorter 6th but I really want a taller 1st and 2nd
Agreed.
The 02m has two final drives, one for 1 ,2 ,3 ,4 and the other for 5, 6. Swapping final drives around, you could make 5th and 6th a lot shorter to make it more ideal for track work.
Don’t know if this will come out right, but will try it
1 2 3 4 5 6
45 68 94 120 150 172 Toyota box
44 71 101 129 161 197 VW box
This is with same size tyres, revving to 8500 rpm.
I agree its a little taller, but nothing horrendus - ask yourself, how many times do you put your car into 6th on track?
Can also do one that has a top speed of 350 mph if you want a realy loooooooooooooonnnnnnng ratio gear set!
Swapping internal gears would be nice, but the input shaft has all the gears made as part of the shaft, rather than sliding on and off, like the Toyota box.
Scrap that!! They can be changed, but only in a limited way due to the dual final drives. Having a head scratch to see if we can sort something out
I think there would be very few tracks you’d be out if 4th though…the long straight at Snetterton is the only one that springs to minds.
Personally I think the ratios are not quite right, but would be interesting to try it.
When I get chance I may stick the figures into this…
I do make 5th on track, with the audi ratios I wouldn’t, I don’t like the the idea of them all being shorter ,just the right ones, oh hang on why do I care my gear box works now Sorry
Thanks Ade
1 2 3 4 5 6
45 68 94 120 150 172 Toyota box
44 71 101 129 161 197 VW box
45 72 102 130 159 195 VW box with shortest FD with longest 1st and 2nd and closest 3rd to 6th from another box
Doesnt help much!
How long are you in 5th gear for Ade? If its only a couple of seconds at a couple of tracks, you may find a slightly taller 4th a better solution, rather than changing from 4th to 5th and 5th to 4th. Forwards and backwards is a whole lot easier than cross gate.
Long enough to be there for a while on some tracks, I would have done something with the ratios if there was a better option than the standard box when I did mine, Will did his final drive as well, but it was too short and negated the car to a 5 speed in my opinion by just removing 1st
Although the max mph in 3rd and 4th is doesn’t look too different to OEM on the face of it, I think this would be noticable on acceletaion. 6th gear basically becomes an over drive - What rpm that would be at 70mph? The car might not even have enough torque to pull if its too low down lol.
The longer 4th could be quite useful though. Anglsey is another one that 5th is only used for a split second.
70 mph is around the 3500 rpm mark. Should pull OK, just not up a massive hill.
There used to be a circuit simulator on the Bosch motorsport website, where you could put in all the car info, and then it would work out theoretical lap times. You could then change all the info and it would recalculate. Needs loads of memory to run it though, and always makes my lap top crash! Will try to dig it out.
You need to short shift at Goodwood for the noise police.
Lavant is 130+ and the sweeping curve after madgwick is 125

its the lap-sim package right at the bottom of the page.
At Donny, I use 6th a lot… and was also on the rev limiter down the Craners too…
Hang on… that was in 2nd!
