With regards to the engine there has been a change of plans. I’ve sold the trophy spec VVC back to Marc and have decided after taking advice to rebuild the VHPD. Now there is nothing wrong with my VHPD, it was running beautifully with 52k on the clock but it wouldn’t have been right to do all this work and not give it a properly good rebirth. So the engine is also commencing it’s rebuild this week and should be ready early to mid October. We haven’t finalised the full spec yet but it’s nothing out of the ordinary and will run using the OE ECU. I have no interest to increase the power. In the pursuit of long term reliability and high spectrum OCD we’ll clean up the block, head, cam cover, a little porting, have the TB’s rebuilt, fit Kent pullies, new water pump, new sleeves & pistons, new starter motor, new alternator, new clutch, fly wheel reconditioned with the usual new gaskets, belt etc. I’ll post up the full spec and its build journey also later but today it looked like this…
Must seem like not a great deal is going on with so little updates but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Big news is the bodywork is finished, I have done something a little out of the ordinary and possibly not to everyone’s taste. I like it though, it should go well with the gloss black TMR’s
The exhaust system is now finished. The manifold, flexi and decat have all been ceramic coated. I picked up the exhaust from Lenton Automotive in Halesowen this morning. As heavy as it is, it has been opened, cleaned, packed with Acousta-Fil around a newly fitted perforated pipe, welded shut permanently now and (hi-temp) painted. There really wasn’t enough room to make it repackable but it should last a little longer and be a little bit quieter. There’s always the option of after market at a later date but Gavin’s done a great job, very please all round. The Manifold, flexy and decat were threat to thermal coating of there own.
My new fuel pump arrived from Seriously Lotus last week so popped that in today as well. I had fitted the original pump into the Pro-Alloy tank but it’s played on my mind over the months. Why go to all the trouble of fitting a new tank and not fitting a new pump, it is 17 years old after all. Not forgetting new silicon hoses and clips. Cleaned, stripped and anodised the shear panel, it’s looking like new down there.
So this morning another no fun job but it’s a damn sight less expensive then buying the big bolts new. De rust with the Dremel, remove old thread lock with a wire brush, a vinegar bath and got them Zinc Coated.
So I finally got the car home today ready for the big rebuild but not before I had the dash painted. The windscreen was showing it’s mileage so a nice shiny new one went back on.
Not sure if you remember, I had a load of stuff anodised including some blanking plates for the foot well and new floor panels kindly supplied by Mark. Fitted both blanking plates yesterday. The passenger side I bolted using the extinguisher bracket and the drivers side I bonded using 3M VHB tape. Looks neat, certainly an improvement on Duck tape. Floor panels will be one of the final jobs along with the rest of the interior I reckon.
I have cleaned and recovered the existing bulkhead heat shield & sound insulation. I have also covered all of the edges with aluminium tape. Obliviously it fits like a glove and looks bloody brilliant
Now these solenoid valves were sooooooooooooo rusty I felt they were beyond saving. Having given it a go I’m still not 100% sure of the job but proof will be in the pudding I guess. Pleased with them though and changed the old (solid) rubber hoses for new silicon ones.
