Bosch Motorsport M4 ABS

That’s a shame bud,…you’ll be missed tomorrow. Next time eh.

Cheers Ben, hope you all have a good day. Gutted i’m not heading towards the bar right now :frowning:

enjoy

New CV joint is fitted, with the spring unattached the wheel can go through full rotation without the shaft bottoming out.

New and old…

Redline CV-2 grease…

Steven uses this on his high powered Subaru’s, don’t think i ever broke a CV joint on my old scooby, obviously wasn’t quick enough!

New boot and clips…

Whilst doing the CV joint Steve noticed that the rear left grub screw holding the coilover spring platform in place was missing. Might be related, had a huge wobble going down Starkeys Straight at 130mph, possibly just over the bump, to be fair it was so violent i didn’t have the wherewithall to know exactly where it was. I mentioned it to Ben at the time and after i had the N/S rear checked over i went out and 1 lap later the CV joint went bang.
Did the suspension cause the huge wobble which damaged the CV joint?
Have been on to Elise Parts about some spare Quantum grub screws.

PS CPS Driveline

Please put some breathers on those CV joints or it’ll happen all over again I almost guarantee it :frowning:

Ok, putting breathers in CV Boots is new to me! I would have presumed that the grease would get out and contaminants in but presumably the idea is to re-grease frequently negating that problem?
Does the use of a Honda in an Elise/Exige result in such an angle, due to shoehorning the engine in, that there are constant CV joint failures or is it just basically an Elise/Exige weak point regardless?

found a pic on the net, using what looks like a small steel straw in effect to vent the joint, is this what you do?..

Yeah just like that. As I understand it, without breathers the heat causes them to balloon and split and then it’s game over. I was told you should be able to squeeze the boot and it deflate/reflate through the breather.

Yeah it’s a bit of a Honda conversion Achille’s Heel.

With breathers and the right grease people seem to find reasonable reliability. I had none and then 3x inners in a year

OK, we’ve ordered 2mm breather pipes.

thanks for the advice

Elise Parts are on the case for the quantum grub screws

and DJ race cars have emailed to say that the wing will be ready next week.

updates?

Yes!

CV Joint is on with breather installed…

Elise parts were very helpful and kindly sent out some grub screws but as a belt and brace exercise i ordered 4 new Quantum spring collars to lock everything off better and because we want to lower the car a bit more but had reached the maximum on the rears, i also ordered 2 rear lowering damper mounts too.

Due to various scenarios not least the spate of breakdowns! we have decided to use a pit-to-car system, i have no doubt that it will primarily be used for taking the piss out of me but this is what we have gone for if anyone is interested…

Autotel Race 600 System

Yeah I can see that could be useful:

“put the kettle on I’ve bust it again”

 i’ve been saying that before every out lap!!

To be honest i’m glad so many things have have failed in a weird kind of way. We’ve then tackled the problem head on, with a fair amount of assistance from here, had some of these issues happened next year we would have been fecked!

Picked car up from Trackfocused this morning, off to Cadwell on Monday if anyone else is there? Looks like being a wet day and not the easiest of places even in the dry, looking forward to it.

Probably shouldn’t post without permission, but they had a new car in the garage and can’t resist, old skool escort getting prepped for classic thunder saloons championship next year with some whopping big tyres on…700bhp

worked on a few of those over the years, even had those wheels on one of my cars, not that wide though

grp A 9" diff, wrc rear craddle, wrc mag uprights, centrelock grpA BBS wheels

pectel t6 or sq6 ecu judging by the trigger wheel.

very nice spec indeed

I was at Cadwell on Monday, wet and greasy in areas so a good test. Set up felt good, did’t get a chance to lower the car but if that builds on what we have now, should be good. MSV had said that a few bikers had come off at park corner the previous day and it was certainly slippy there early on.

Start of the day was the usual hassle, car hit 108dB on first test but they let me go out and warm her up, 104dB on the second so was good to play but i decided not to rev it out so as to not get kicked off. Exhaust needs sorting once and for all. Had a full morning session (which is good for me!) then the N/S CV Joint went again but this time it was the inner which stopped the fun. I now have several outer spares and looks like i’ll need a few inners too but if i can do a deal with CPS Driveline for some shafts i’ll just have 2 complete shafts with joints in the kit bag.

Thats it for 2015, glad i managed to get some seat time over the last few months, wish it had been more but we’ve found and rectified some weak points too. Car will be prepped ready for the new engine and dry sump as well as some tidying up, next time it sees light it will be a 2.2 stroker.

Shame about the inner CV. Looking forward to catching up on track more often.

Me too
Hopefully Ben will sort out a few more trackdays for us all to meet up next year

Fantastic Chris, not been to Cadwell for a looooong time!

Was the inboard rebuilt with breathers etc?

As for 2016 trackdays, I’m working on it!! It’s gonna be a big year for on track fun, get ready :sunglasses:

Thoroughly enjoyed it, couple of years since i’ve been and first time there in the wet :open_mouth:

Nope, will put breathers on the inners now too!

Glad you’re on with organising a few track days for next year, looking forward to breaking down at few

Shouldn’t be so much of a heat problem on the inners I don’t think… be interested to see pics of the failed tripode if you can post some ?
