The exiges.com annual trackday is typically the event of the year for many of us; that couple of days away from our responsibilities to enjoy the company of fellow exigers and our fantastic machines. I therefore felt the weight of responsibility taking over from Pesky, I really didn’t want to fxxx it up! In the end though my role was minimal, use the same formula finessed by Rob, harangue a few people to get booked and the enthusiasm of exiges.com was always going to make the day a success.
So after the shakedown at Donny a couple of weeks ago my car was at Matt Bentley Racing having some electrical gremlins sorted and new dampers. The softer ex-JF Ohlins were very likely contributory to the inboard CV lunching itself and I had very little time to get the car fighting-fit for Anglesey, reformatting the Ohlins was out. The Nitrons had already been sold so I opted to put some stiffly sprung Quantums on.
I’d not really planned ahead so all the shit I needed to take the event I had to lug on the train/tube in the morning rush hour. I think Con’s ‘Red Caliper Award’ is made of depleted-uranium or something as it weighs a bloody ton! Into the car and pointed it at Telford services to meet the other guys. I was expecting it to feel more crashy given the spring-rate, but the ride with the Quantums is really firm, controlled and nuggety, the softer sprung Nitrons were worse on the road tbh. From Telford Ian led, with me behind him and we set off on the familiar pilgrimage on the M54-A5. Like last year we took a short detour on the EVO triangle which I’d imagine is very scenic, but my field of vision was filled with the rear-end of Ian’s car The car was feeling mighty, handling really predictably on the road with a great feedback of road surfaces etc, what an awesome little car.
The usual rabble was assembled at the Premier Inn on Thursday night and we had a good evening of banter and laughs. Sean was outraged that I’d taken the Ohlins off the car in favour of a super stiff setup and was ribbing me pretty relentlessly. When we woke to very wet conditions on Good Friday morning, I started to think he may have had a point, he was of course quick to remind me again when we got to the circuit. Also for some reason as soon as I got in the car the brakes had developed a weird vibration after being mint beforehand. I did not think too much about it as given my setup, power, ZZRs and the conditions most of my attention was focussed on keeping the ship pointed (generally ) in the right direction and on the black stuff. Like others have said it was good to have the mixture of conditions and the morning really focussed the mind. The afternoon dried out and my setup started to come into its own. As ChrisB mentioned we had an awesome few laps with me pushing him around in his fantastic ex-MarcP Honda 211. The car is quick and Chris had clearly got to grip with its charms and I was having to put some effort in to keep him honest. It was the perfect end to the on-track action, thanks Chris, good times Video is coming bud. Brakes got a bit better but there was still an irritating pulsing through the pedal. I’m still on the learning curve of both the new dampers and (like Tim) the diff which really comes into play in the wet…I’m still learning. My only regret of the day is that I did not have some tuition as my driving was properly scrappy and I know there was a lot more to come from the car.
It looks like the R300 tasters were a success which I’m really happy about. Everyone seemed to enjoy the experience which I’m not at all surprised at since they’re fantastic little cars. I said to Jonny that I bet there’s a few people on PH this weekend looking at Caterhams I certainly would love one as long as it could be in as well-as and not instead-of capacity. DaveP and I have rented Jonny’s 620R for an evening at Donny next month…bring it.
After a quick drink with Rob and another very entertaining night in the bar it was up again early on Saturday with Ian for the drive home. We decided to do the EVO triangle again but this time at a very sedate pace as Ian had done a wheel-bearing. Alas not far in, my car started to cough and stutter at the smallest throttle openings. I managed to nurse it to this farm-shop place and pull over. It would have to be pretty bloody obvious for me to find what the issue was and so unsurprisingly after a couple of minutes of Ian and I staring intently into the engine bay,…we’d drawn a blank. Thankfully Prof Shorrocks was passing and diagnosed more fuel-relay fun and managed to patch me up to get home…thanks John I massively appreciate it. Pics below of our cars on the EVO triangle when we stopped to clean the lens on the GoPro. That pair of cars have been doing trackdays together for a decade
Sorry for rambling on, and now its Oscar time :
The guys that could not make it were genuinely missed, you know who you are. Especially missed were Mike/Pete who could not make it due to ill health.
Thanks to Jonny, Sarah and the team at Bookatrack, they really are the pros.
Thanks also for the astonishing enthusiasm of everyone attending the day who made it such a success, cheers lads.
