Fingers crossed for you matey!!
I did not realise you were running a VHPD in it!
Quick picture of the engine bay with our new exhaust system fitted. Getting busy in their now, but it’s much better in terms of layout now with regards to the new rather massive wastegate and how it joins the rest of the system. We’ve also made one of the silencers bigger for good measure.
Scuffers has also now fitted in an extra water pump to the cooling system to keep the flow rate strong, fitted an additional Bosch 044 fuel pump, added more datalogging sensors and the coolest bit, a push-to-pass button on the steering wheel for high boost down the straights.
Proper mapping starts tomorrow. I’ll let you know how we get on.
Looking good Jamie.
What have you done about flexibility / expansion / contraction between the engine and the exhaust? We suffered quite a lot with the engine moving at a different rate to the exhaust system and we had an 8" flexi section and a couple of expansion joints. The strain that puts on everything has to give somewhere and it ends up just ripping things off.
Looking at how you have it, I would say the first thing to give will be the small bolts that hold the exhaust housing of the turbo on.
Please dont take anything I am saying as any kind of criticism, I just wanted to pass on what I have seen on my car over the years.
Good luck with the mapping. Let us know how you get on!!
Good point Sean and to be honest, until we run it at Snett next Friday, we won’t know exactly how the exhaust system is going to behave during a proper track session. The first dyno session certainly didn’t highlight any problems though.
There is a slip joint just after the first bend after the turbo. There’s also a slip joint on the wastegate pipe. The back boxes are both hung from the standard locations and should be able to move a bit too if they need to. The turbo and wastegate fittings are all V-band and Pro Alloy have made that superb support for it which comes off the cam cover. The manifold is 3mm thick 321 stainless and very sturdy. So with a bit of luck that part of it shouldn’t move around much. Wayne did explain to me the problems that some of the Audi guys had come across with regards to this actually and I remember you having problems at Brands just after you’d done your conversion. If we have any issues, it’ll be fairly easy to weld in a flexi section anyway, so we’ll have to see what happens.
Looks like a 30 foot silver Python has attached itself to your engine!!!
Bloody hell! That pipework would run a hydro electric substation!
Cool!!!
Mapping went well yesterday, apart from a) breaking the dyno…sort of. Even doing our runs in 6th gear, the dyno started giving up when it was hot. And b) the in-tank fuel lifter pump now can’t supply the swirl pot with enough juice.
Anyway, on base boost pressure, i.e wastegate spring pressure only, it’s making about 450 at the hubs. Today the rest of the mapping is being done with some proper boost.
Quick vid of things getting warm.
Mapping done. The engine is running perfectly and there is just power and torque the moment any throttle is applied. However, it seems the car broke the dyno again, so mapping had to be done in a slightly different way. Mapping up to 5500rpm and then mapping separately from 5500rpm upwards on a different run.
Anyway, Sam and Scuffers decided to leave the power output at a sensible level, bearing in mind we’re running on normal pump fuel and the fuel pump is already running at over 90% duty cycle.
So the numbers are…571bhp at the hub flanges. i.e, about 650bhp at the engine. Torque was about 380 ftlbs at the hubs.
Here’s a link to the plot:- (Anyone know how to make this page appear on the page)
Awesome result Jamie, well done.
Have you guys considered that Scuffers ageing reactions, are not going to be able to keep up?!?
Ha ha. Don’t worry, I’ve been out with him lots over the last few years and he’s still very, very quick. Trust me
EFA
Love him, really!
Well done Jamie/Scuffers and Team EP, that’s very impressive.
Looking forward to seeing it competing which alas probably won’t be until the southern TA rounds in September.
Get some video up as soon as you’re running it somewhere…
Well done Jamie, good luck.
Don’t think I’d want to stand that close
Good work, though
So how did the shakedown at Snett go today Jamie.
If neither you, Scuffers or your engine shat yourselves then in my view you will have done well
I believe the car caught fire Benja, there’s more info on seloc
Gutted to hear of the car on fire …
Really feel for you
All the best for the rebuilt
Gutted at least Scuffers is ok and the rebuild is underway.
It’s not been a good week for this board wih two owner’s car sustaining heavy battle damage
Sorry to read about this & Muu’s damage.
Best wishes for speedy rebuilds, both
Cheers! Both cars are in good hands.
