That’s one HELL of a smash Kee.I should imagine you’ll be re-living that one for quite some time. What hit the roll bar ? Lucky it didn’t hit your head. What are your plans ? Are you going to replace it or change for something else ?

BLOODY HELL!!! [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/shocked.gif[/image]

Holy Sh*t, you are one lucky chap, someone must be looking after you !Incedible the roll bar collapsed like that but not the windscreen frame, oh, i’d hate to think the outcome if that had collasped as well. Here am i feeling sorry for myself but not anymore, my thoughts are with you Kee and your passenger.Best RegardsPhil

Bloody hell!I think maybe Mr Adams at Lotus should have a look at those pictures. What use is that bloody roll bar? Pretty impressive wheel destruction as well.Glad to see you came out of that OK anyway.Get well soon mate

I wonder if this is why the Elise has the support beam from the middle of the roll bar to the passenger-side floor?

WOW!Glad you are OK Kee!I think I might look at how to support the middle of the roll bar from the floor. I know this isnt probably the time, but do you think the engine would be for sale? Want something to drop in my Elise. Bri

Good to see you’re in such high spirits…The car is most definitely an Ex-ige now (sorry, using Brian’s joke)

gosh, it sort of makes you start thinking a bit when looking at this roll bar if there was only grass touching it…erm…how much grass is there at donny ?

Ya dont mess about do you Kee!

Keenan, glad to see your ok, me and the boss have seen your yellow monster around the Whiteley area for some time, made us think about changing the Elise, shame that its gone as I was going to blagg a lift one day.If its any consolation, about a year and a half a go I spun (360) my Elise at the exact same point but mainly due to my over correction I spun the other way and miss the curbs. At the time I put this down to the lift off oversteer, in wet conditions, and poor driving ability.Hope to see you around area again.Huey.

Jeez, that’s a nasty smash - scary!Glad to see you’re alright.Hope you’re back to full health ASAP.Al

Kee,Glad to see you are still in one piece, with that sort of dammage to the “roll” bar someone must be looking after you. quote:I wonder if this is why the Elise has the support beam from the middle of the roll bar to the passenger-side floor? If there was no really obvious impact cause responsible for the bar folding the way it did, I would be very intersted in extra support in the event of being up the wrong way. I think the fact the windscreen withstood the crash is telling the “roll” bar looks that much stronger. I wonder if they include roll over bar strenth in any crash testing?

My comment about the additional support was slightly out of context now that I have thought about it. US spec Elises have a roll cage fitted with this additional support bar. This bar that I am speaking of actually prevents fore/aft movement of the roll bar/cage structure in a rollover.Although it does appear the addition of a roll cage would have been a great benefit in this situation.

Is it me but… Check out the Lotus plastic seat protector on the Drivers seat… Is that to protect the inside from any minor marks and scuffs!!!Glad to hear you’re ok Kee… That roll bar is a massive worry!

Yikes! That is scary. It looks even worse than my Elise 190 did after I crashed it at over 90 mph!The roll over bar may look bad, but it almost certainly saved your life, Keenan. It may have bent in the middle, but the overall height reduction is fairly small all things considered. I’m sure things would have been much worse without it.Having said that, I’m now seriously considering that roll bar reinforcement from the Sport 190. I’d probably do without the diagonal brace that runs into the passenger footwell, but the ‘A’ frame under the roll over bar would surely help in a crash like that. What does everybody else think?

Roll bar looks same as Tut who rolled his Elise end over end - provoked plenty of discussion on the Elise BBS. OK so it withstood one impact, but say it rolled again and took another hit.Incidentally I remember when reading about the Bentley Le Mans car, and when they decided to run with the coupe, one of the major design issues was making the roll bar up to the correct strength as it was necessarily much longer than the single seater, therefore requiring less force (to give same torque at the fixed points) to bend it. Perhaps the 340R arrangement would be better.I have the roll cage as per the sport Elise fitted to my car. This has the diagonal brace along with it, along with an ‘A frame’ at the back. You will need all these parts to do it.They come from Lotus Motorsport and are made by Safety Devices - and are FIA approved. Approx cost 600 sqid, if you are Lotus Life members, give them a call and ask for your 10% discount on all parts / accessories. Dave Wilson is a good chap there, and mention my name.It does require a lot of work - the cars with a harness bar already were practically built around the harness bar. And the bracket that holds the diagonal brace never quite fits, so needs some machining. And you will lose the speakers.Alternatively Kelvedon Motors (Lotus specialist, Lotus approved for warranty work - look for them under www.racecar.com then clients, have their own roll cage which may be a bit cheaper. Ask for Andy (formerly Haydon Daytune), again mention my name. Labour rates are approx 45 plus vat, and I would reckon on 1000 squid to fit, although might be less now as they have some practice. You obviously lose some practicality, but its not too bad for the passenger, went on the Elise French Frollick event - about 400 fast miles and he didn’t bang his head once! although padding might be an idea.I’m away on business, but will post some pics if anyone is interested…CheersMark
