Wireless network (NEC)

Chaps,

Any SITTS on here who can tell me why, since I swapped to BT business with a static IP and their own hub, I cannot get my wireless network to talk to each other, although I can get t’internet on all three PC’s?

Oh Russ, we need more info than that (and even then we’re not going to be able to help you as wireless kit is infernally temperamental).

In theory the static IP back to BT should be irrelevant, as whatever address you were previously assigned each time the DSL modem connected would have most likely been translated within your wireless network anyway. The same thing is most likely happening now.

Has the BT hub replaced a wireless router/modem?
What make are the other wireless routers? (different kit often struggle)
What security have you set on the wireless networks? If any, are the WEP keys all correctly entered and MAC addresses if you’re filtering on those? Best plan is to turn off all the security and see if you can get it working, then switch security options back on one at a time.

There’s a starter for 10 but like most people you’ll probably struggle for weeks and then change something you’re sure you tried before and it’ll all start working for no good reason.

Ian

I am manic for the next couple of days but gis a call at the weekend if it is not fixed and I’ll talk you through getting it sorted.

interesting. On a small tangent, what do people do as jobs on this forum? I’m in finance…

I’m in finance…

Give us a quid then

I need a pony!

Russ, it don’t work, cus you is a northern numpty!!!

Pour some gravy on it, that might help!!!

Pour some gravy on it, that might help!!!

I knew I would get some great answers!

Ian, it is prolly the security as you say, as the network MSHOME is not available, please speak to your administrator! I thought I was the f***** admin! I have not set any security yet but it probably has its own internal default setting? I know what you mean, one day I will sit slightly differently on my chair and it will work. Bloody thing.

Ben, thanks - I will call you at the weekend, hopefully before we have a staff riot - it is great working off a memory stick…not.

Sean - I tried that but it overheated and broke a CV.

Oh, and F*** off!

Are you running XP ?

Try going to start->control panel->network connections

right click and select properties on the wireless connection. have you got ‘file and printer sharing for microsoft networks’ ticked ? If not enable it and click ok.

Another test you can do is check the windows firewall settings (found in control panel in XP). Ensure ‘file and printer sharing’ is allowed (exceptions list).

Then you can try this …

if you goto start->run

type ‘cmd’ and press ‘ok’

type ‘ipconfig’ in the black window that comes up and press enter, you will see the machines ip address, make a note of it (example 192.168.0.1) and go to one of the other machines.

At the other machine click start->run and type ‘cmd’ and press enter. in the black window type (replace 192.168.0.1 with the IP address from your machine)-

ping 192.168.0.1

press enter and please post back the response. This is a simple check to confirm the machines can ‘see’ each other.

Dave.

OK ta Dave, had already done the rest but not the cmd one. Will check and report back.

Cheers

Likely the easy answer is that one or more of the addresses are private, that is the address is converted before reaching the internet. But hey, what do I know I’m on another continent

OK, pinged and this is what I am seeing:-

Request timed out (x4)
Packets sent - 4 Received = 0 Lost = 4

Ok thanks.

Can you repeat the ipconfig part of my last post and tell me what the “ip address”, “subnet mask” and “default gateway” are of the two machines you tested ? This will tell us if the machines are on the same network and connected to the same router. If they are then its a security issue on the router or machines.

Is it IK to post this info on a public board?

Also, getting another message:

MSHOME is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network.

Yes its safe, however PM me the details if you want to be sure.

Is your network a workgroup (no central server, just peer to peer) or a domain (has a PDC server) ?

Just peer to peer (I think!)

numbers as follows:

All subnet masks are 255.255.255.0

Gateways are:

192.168.1.2
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.3

are they the ip addresses or gateways ? I think they are your ip addresses, can I ask what the gateway is please ?

They are the IP addresses.

Default gateway is 192.168.1.254

FYI: All 192.168.. are private addresses and are NOT routable over the internet. This means they are being translated into another address somewhere else, this is why you cannot get to them.
