Wanted: Big Brake Discs / Kit for an S2

Looking to upgrade the brakes on my Exige. So after some big discs. Ideally front and rear, but would consider either/or. Not too worried about calipers but if a good kit comes up at a good price with some 4 pots I won’t say no

I got mine from Dave at SL… Oz made Alcon 308mm with Nitron Bells. Fab difference and braking modulation is just night and day!

IMHO, you don’t need 4 pots…

Put some proper brake fluid in as well!

Pete I think you are spending to much time in the sunshine  Alcon and Nitron are made in the UK.

Thanks for the advice. I had read that just upgrading to bigger discs was the recommended approach.

You don’t have enough stopping power with racing brake fluid and some decent pads like CL5+'s!? :open_mouth:

CL5+ decent pads???

They are not very well thought of here due numerous owners having them fall to pieces on them.

yeah I’d go performance friction instead

Great stopping power but beware the dreaded brake dust when damp!!!

yeah just got some matt grey wheels for exactly that reason!

Swings 'n roundabouts really, the aggressive pads eaither dust or seperate - I’ll go with the dust I think.

Stopping power is fine, its the ability to handle the heat that is the problem. I’ve got Pagid RS42’s, high performance brake fluid, braided lines. Rockingham Track day earlier this year with these guys, at the end of the banked section there was a hairpin, so hard on the brakes from 120 down to 30? No problem. However the corner afterwards I lost pedal feel. Next corner no problem.

After getting some advice it seems my discs are just getting too hot, ie they can’t dissipate the heat generated from the hard brake before that next corner, but ok a few hundred metres later. Unlikely to be fluid as that would take longer to cool down and show symptoms further round the track. Solution, bigger discs to dissipate the heat quicker.

Think I’m going to get some 308mm APs on the front, use the standard 2 pot calipers. See how that goes. Could go for 295 or 304, but with the 308 I have the option of getting some AP 4 pots on in the future, if I decide I need to increase stopping power.

you know what I had the same issue with that right hander at rockingham

Is there a way to increase airflow ?

Through the crash structure.

Interesting. What brake setup do you have?

Maybe just go for the 315mm rotors, no cost difference and will give you better heat dissipation due to the size.

Where can you get them from Ade? 308mm is the biggest at Eliseparts?

Seriously lotus, he will also supply you the long caliper bolts and suitable spacers
All round it is cheaper than any other option as the rotors are slightly cheaper and you can use the 177mm bells which are cheaper than the 190mm ones for the 308 AP ones.

And can they be used with standard 2 pot calipers?

Yep, speak to Dave

You could always go really cheap and get the 308mm Lotus solid discs and the caliper bolts and spacers?

or this always looks good value?

IIRC you should be using the 190 bells, otherwise at 315mm your unswept (cold) area is too large.

Mine was laregly stock with 295mm AP fronts & AP rears, PF pads, RBF660 fluid.

Plan is to go 315mm front, 4 pots, 2 pots on rear, 308mm rear.
