VHPD install, wont start...ideas?

Hi all,

just fitted a VHPD into a Mk1 Elise, tried to start it today, currently theres nowt happening.

here’s the situation.

I’ve added a wire to the loom for the twin coil (pin 3 of coil pack, connected to pin 5 of ECU.
Emerald fitted. (map Ex1, came with the software, an old Russ T map, not sure how good it is).
I’m also using the VHPD 2 pin IACV, (got some info from emerald onto which wires from the 5 pin type I needed to use for the 2 pin type).

when I try to start it - it’s just not starting, it turns over and over, I’ve checked and I’m getting sparks, and I know I’m getting fuel from the 2 hefy backfires I’ve had out of it…it appears they’re just not in synch.

I’m just after ideas really…any thoughts?

I’m thinking maybe if the crank position sensors’ knackered it might not go. what about the crank sensor alignment pattern, does a VHPD flywheel use the Rover 2 (36-4) pattern in the emerald?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Joff

ps if anybody’s got a good map for a 130/110 vhpd I’m all ears.

Fuel pressure, spark and turn-over but not starting are the same symptoms of having the TPS stuck at 100% on a std ECU (spark plug cleaning mode apparently).

That wouldn’t account for the misfires or Emerald though.

Good luck!

Ian

I am in just the same situation, exige engine fitted in an S1 elise but cant start it I will PM you my number and give us a call, it good to talk could end up with both running!!!

Can’t really help either of you…but good luck anyway.

At least with the emerald you can check that all of the sensors are working correctly. So if you haven’t checked the sensors I would do that first. I would bet you have a wiring issue of some kind. ARe you sure you are firing the correct side of the coil pack at the right time?

Have you set-up the ECU properly?

Thanks for the responses all

I think I’ve set the ECU up properly…but the bu99er aint starting so I may well be wrong.

I’ll try swapping the coil wiring around tonight, I fitted it on spades for just such an eventuality, but didn’t want to try it yesterday for fear of causing damage, but I don’t think it can get any worse.

I’ll give you a bell later Simon (Turner), let you know if this works.

I haven’t checked the sensors…didn’t notice I could…what have I missed?

if you leave your laptop plugged into the emerald and turn over the engine you should be picking up reading from crank sensor etc

I dont think the crank sensor is a problem, as if it was the ECU wouldnt ground the coils.
If i were you, I would doublecheck the values for the ECU configuration.
If anybody could post the correct values for the input and output details, i think it would be helpfull.

you’ve got me thinking now george, I did change the config to a single coil setup to run it briefly on the original 120 bhp K, I’m sure I swapped it back…but maybe I forgot!

certainly worth checking.

I have also wired pin 3 of coil pack, to pin 5 of ECU.All the sensors appear to be working
I will await your call

Hi Joff,

Crack the TBs open a little more and retry, also go into the live adjustments screen and check that the ECU can see the cranking RPM…

BTW I have a good VHPD map for 130/110.

Dave

Cheers Dave,

I’ll try that tomorrow, swapped the coil wiring, don’t think it’s that, so swapped back.
no joy tonight either, batterys gone now!

tomorrow’s the night…I can just tell!

the neighbours are getting a bit narked with the backfiring!

Joff

Also no luck the plugs dont seem as wet as I imagined after cracking, also if I put a spark plug on the end of a lead the spark does not appear to be as bright/intense as I expected from a coil pack.

Not something as simple as a fuse blown?

or empty fuel tank

Plenty of fuel I’m sure…I’ll be checking fuses and all wiring tonight. I’m having a back to basics evening!

Not stuck injectors? - Had all 4 stuck on a new M100 engine due to lack of use - were gunged up with old petrol residual crap…

don’t think so Simon, had alook at the injectors tonight and they appeared pretty healthy, getting plenty of fuel onto the plugs as well. Still no Joy getting it going though. I can see the cranking RPM on live adjustments, so the crank position sensor’s working.

my sparks aren’t quite as strong as I’d imagined either, but they’re there allright.

can anybody confirm the settings I should have on ECU config. I think it’s the Rover 2 pattern, since that’s the only one that appears to give a spark, what about the output info??

driving me up the wall now, I’ve double checked everything!..with the obvious exception of whatever it is that’s stopping it bleedin going!

What you need is a specialist.
