Finally I am a member of the Big Wing Club… Hurrah!
That looks great!
That looks looooooooads better
So… I’ve been greeted with the gift of an annoying traction control light on my dashboard the last couple of weeks… from everything I found, it sounded like the brake switch - which is apparently very common. So I gave our good friends at Seriously Lotus a bell and fitted a replacement… sadly no change. Fast forward to today, had it in at Central Lotus and their scan tool was able to throw some light on it: The yaw rate sensor wasn’t communicating! They unplugged it, plugged it back in firmly and I’m all good again! Result!
Good result, basically turn it off and back on , fault gone?
I was interested to know a little more about how my car’s suspension is currently setup… it feels ‘fine’ but the need to meddle with stuff is pretty strong with most of us, so I thought I’d best meddle…
So I bought myself a BG Racing string alignment set, and the companion caster/camber gauge… wowwee, it’s a nice bit of kit - but it’s taken quite some assembling and tweaking to make it usable, lol!
I’ve used all my allocation of ‘car time’ this weekend just getting it setup, so I’ve not had much chance to mess around, but I found that my rear is basically at -2 degrees camber, whereas the front is around -0.6 degrees… which is simply no good for us meddlers… so I ordered some new steering arms that allow for more negative camber… The car is mainly for track use so I’m just going to go for something around -2 degrees on the front….
I’ll report back when I’ve had chance to fit them!
The need to fiddle never goes away does it?
Hopefully I’ll get some photos later, but just wanted to post this video here! I went to Donny - it was about 27c so I was on the lookout for heat soak, but I didn’t notice any performance issues at all. In fact, I can definitely say that the car goes like stink and I’m not convinced of the need of any more power until I can drive it better!
So, here’s one of my laps - I screwed up and got a little wiggle in the early part of Coppice, leading to a slower max speed down Starkey’s Straight, but the car is clearly capable of much, much quicker times than I can drive… It’s clear from watching it back just how cautious I am, and how slowly I go through certain bits… I back off quite a bit through Craners, I brake too hard into the Old Hairpin and go through there much slower than most people… I hold back on Schwantz - thank God I don’t need to do this for a living and it’s just for a fun day out, lol!
Next time you go let me know!
Epic!
Just caught up on last few updates. Car looks great at Donny. Had a tinker with alignment yet?
Thanks mate! I was in a rush before my track day, so just took out all the camber shims on the front and got about -1.5 degrees. It seems much more convincing now - very confident through the corners… I’m actually going to be spending a bit of time on my ‘bus’ now so won’t fit my new steering arms for a bit, but having the alignment strings is making me feel much more comfortable with fiddling - at least I know it’s all aligned nicely at all times!
I drove the VW for 4 days then got back in the Lotus and nearly crashed it the first time I turned the steering wheel - the difference is so utterly mind-boggling between the two! It obviously stands to reason that it’s a very different machine, but the stark contrast is stunning! It feels like a flipping fighter jet, lol!
