Tyre choice

I’m planning to go on a european driving holiday later this year in the exige and the A048’s on the rear will need replacing before I leave, and probably when I come back as well! Expected to cover approximately 3000miles. I’m tempted to fit a more normal road tyre to try and reduce costs.

What would you recommend? Stump up the cash for 48’s or fit something else all round. If so what - T1R’s or Kumho’s?

Thanks

How about the new Toyo R1Rs? They’re a hafway house between 48s / R888 and “normal” road tyres.

I thought the R1R’s cost about the same as 48’s?

I’m not sure how much they cost - was thinking more of that they’d be preferable should you meet any monsoons in your 3000 miles

no complaints with the Kumho’s here !

no complaints with the Kumho’s here !

I run T1R’s as road only tyre and have no compaints, seam to last quite well.

Yeah for a long road trip like that I think I would deffo go for a more road focussed tyre. The last thing you need on unfamiliar roads if its is hooning down with rain is a road legal slick!!

Just a quick amendment, the T1Rs are not the best on ice, they are very nervous, the orginal tyres were much better, That said I try to kkep it in the garage when its that cold!

I have tried A048’s T1R’s and R888’s

R888’s win hands down all round.BUT ARE LETHAL WHEN NEW IN THE WET - NEED SCRUBBING IN FOR 200miles or so in the dry…

I buzzed off a set of T1R’s after the A048’s and hand on heart I thought they were ‘totally f*cking dangerouse in the wet or dry’.

Fancy trying the Kumhos but think I will use R888’s until they are banned…

:frowning:

Only tried the R888’s on track in dry and in my limited track experience thought they were ace

I second the above comment about T1Rs. I had them on my bmw and lotus exige at the same time and they were nothing short of cr@p. My experience on track with them involved me going backwards onto the grass when they overheated massively. Its that experience that is putting me off trying the R888.

Ye of little faith David, or was that a joke???

;o) I will try the 888s next time. You lot are gunna get it though if they are poop.

If you find them poop, it wont be the tyres at fault…

Thats why they were cr.p!

Seriously, I had T1 R’s on my Elise 160 and they were indeed rubbish!

But R888 are a totally different prospect with much stiffer sidewalls and softer compound… they are EXCELLENT!

lol, very good. ok, ok I will try the 888s :O)

i had T1R’s on my 350Z and took them off after 500miles they where so bad !

Thankfully there are no similarity’s between them and 888’s

What about Toyo R1R’s?

Only problem is that they don’t come in the correct front wheel size of 195/50R16. Has anyone fitted the 205/45R16?

Will I be the first to fit R1R’s to an Exige???
