TRD fitting woes

Hi, fitted a trd box today, this was a very fiddly job, I wouldnt do it again by choice.

Anyway in fitting it, the bottom clip has snapped off. Although to be fair it seemed to be under a fair amount of pressure. I noticed the clip was attached differently than the top one. Not sure what to do, I can push the box together with an amount of force, it just seems the rubber on the filter is fairly thick. The top clip clicks in easy enough but can unclick abit too easy. Just dont seem as well thought about as the one I took off. Bit disappointed really, also risked taking it out on one clip, yeah the super charger is more noisy and you can sometimes hear it sucking but no great deal.

Wondered if this has happened to anyone else and if so have you fashioned some kind of clamp, am off to b&q tomorrow to see what I can make, but hate the fact that its a bodge… :frowning:

Yep my one won’t close , it could be the cause of my car stalling when slowing down , dealer fitted my TRD so it’s not just you with problems fitting it , I didn’t know just how shite the fit was until I tried to change the filter , I’m changing it for the VIS .

you will have noted that the mounting bolts are in a different postion and the bracket therefore needs bending ( with the force of several elephants)

I think mine,s coming off soon in an attempt to quieter the car a tad …
Also the poor quality may give issues in the longer term …

What do you mean mate?

Mine is quiet… unless I step on the loud pedal… but it is not that much noisier that the OEM!

Whats this about quality??? JSR fitted mine and it fits very well. The bracket was bent to suit.

All seems good to me!

Hi Pete …
Before fitting I checked the seal between filter and housing for a gas tight fit …
I found that it wasn’t so good on mine so I assembled it on the bench with a silicone bead whilst slightly compressing the joint …
When fully cured and with full closing pressure I’m sure I got a good seal …

On the noise front , my car is loud ! Any taming of the noise can only help me at tracks like Donny with a drive by limit …

I’m not desperate to remove it , but probably will do so before next season …

Hth.

Well here some pictures and video of my problems that I found…

Original box and trd side by side, notice the hole difference

Missing plastic lock after it snapped off under pressure

Lugs that held on metal bracket, snapped off way to easy

Plastic adapter that is twisted must be a moulding issue

Pegs that I dremeled off because these actually created a gap after the air filter

Video of trd airbox and filter, not fitting very well

Video I took of the air filter rocking in the in housing

Dr Troy …
Your pictures illustrate exactly why (nearly 2 years ago) I used silicone to seal the housing …
I remember too snipping off the protruding lugs

Im no engineer but here is my fix for the broken bracket

I am an Engineer and it looks like a reasonable effort

JDS fitted mine, he did seem to have a bit of a game hooking the pipes n that up but I think he got it done in about an hour, but then he is a top mechanic

Good to hear the sucking noise is due to the airbox and not the car being fooxxored up :S

IMO its over engineered for its purpose, I looked at the VIS and that looks simple, easy, but no way worth 300 quid.

This is a mess, made up of too many parts, also I would check the adapter to see if them pegs have been whipped off because when everything is together they do create a gap on the opposite side of the filter. Kind of defeats the purpose of a filter. Also the side which sucks in the air is the side (reasons unbeknown to me) the adapters side has the corners missing, so not only having pegs to create a gap, the sides missing to allow the pegs to show the gap, crazy?

Anyway, moan over

Just OCD alone won’t let me keep the bodged airfbox on , silicone and bent brackets on a 40k car !? 300 is too expensive for a carbon tube and filter but I know it will fit and not leak and I can change the filter without the wheel and arch liner off .
For me the TRD has been a false economy .

I know what you mean, I would like that VIS

Anyway couple more pix:

This is one of the pegs

This is with the peg still on, and closing all the bits together, you can see the gap

This is with pegs removed and closed up

So the bracket snapped because the pegs caused to much pressure when closed, not great hey

So, What is the VIS filter then?

I am guessing it is the PiperCross Kit? BUt cannot see a high flow induction one for the SC Exige S?

Linky please>>>

Still cannot see a problem with the TRD if it is fitted properly… which JSR did! :sunglasses:

Based on this image, all I did to fit mine was drill the 2 holes in the correct place in the new box, then it all lines up, no bending struggling etc required

Yeah the VIS is just a carbon pipe with a foam filter that sits in the side pod , I’m not sure any of the filters make much gain on a SC exige , have you had a look at the fit on yours ? Like I said the TRD is just too bodgey for me if I have to bend- glue - bolt - tiewrap it to fit .

I did none of that to fit mine, I just drilled the holes in the correct place, I don’t see why people keep bending the bracket and then leading to miss alignment? If I take mine off I’ll get some pictures

Just had a look at the ones I have in stock and they fit togather fine with the standard lotus supplied filters.
Not quite sure why ther is a gap on this one?
Martin,
If you would like a replacement give me a call, I will use that one on my own 111r.
Did you use the supplied filter? or a different one?
