Track Preperation Part 1

I thought I would do a bit of a picture diary of the work I am doing on my car over the next month in case anyone is interested.

A lot of you know I am going to give the Mid Engines Race Series a go next year, so in preperation for that I am taking my once immaculate, one owner, 10,000 mile car and am ripping it to bits in order to prepare it for racing. I am going to do it in two stages. Stage one will be basically everything apart from my new engine, so cage, extinguisher, battery cut off and lighten the car where possible. I am also going to try and make it easier to work on and fix problems etc. If anyone has any suggestions or coments, please let me know. I need all the help I can get. Big thanks to Randy and Russ who have already offered help and advice!!

Work started a week or so ago with me taking the engine and gearbox out, so that the box could be sent back to Quaife for a few internal mods and to have a freshen up.

I did a bit more on Sunday. I took the front clam off and the roof and the seats came out and the dampers came off.

I dropped the dampers off at Plans today, so that the heavier springs could be put on and the dampers re-valved to suit.

I’ll try and get a few pics up tomorrow.

Next is dash out and the heater box etc. out. Then I am gonna strip the wiring loom and make a new one.

Ordered a bag tank as well today, so that will go in as well. Also ordered some perspex side windows.

Sean…

…in case anyone is interested.

I think you can pretty much assume that all of us will be interested…great idea, look forward to enviously watching your progress!

Yep, good luck Mate, it will be great to see you at next season’s meetings

This is great, thanks Sean! (even if you are just trying to scare the competition, you old dog! )

Ian

Usually catch the Mid-engined at Mallory and Donny so I’ll be sure to give you some support.

That man has got guts! Will follow this with interest…

Hi Sean - will help and attend at meets wherever possible. Is there a list of venues and times/dates yet so I can book em off with her who shall be obeyed???

Simon

Race dates tend not to be available until the New Year, once the circuits get their calenders sorted (eg F3, Brit GT, BTCC etc). I’m sure that Russ or Sean will post the dates as soon as they are known

ta!

and keep an eye on here Mid Engined Site Clicky

thanks Russ!

Good luck to you Sean!

A massive undertaking to convert from road to race car, hope everything goes according to plan.

Look forward to seeing it in the mid-engined next year.

Thanks for all of the comments guys!!!

OK a few more pics from day two which was a couple of hours on Sunday.

I hate to say it, but I like it with the roof off

Big Thanks to Andy D who lent me his set of super light and super stiff shocks while mine are away being revalved and stuff

I am working away until the end of next week, so no more progress till I get back. But then it will be full speed ahead, until it is done!!!

Heard today that Quaife have finished modding my box with the uprated claw and selector barrel indent spring. So that is ready to go back onto the engine.

Sean…

oh dear…

Sean

can we have a pic like this please

[image]http://fishki.net/podborka2/46/piccsav03.jpg[/image]

Guess the car? I’m going with Golf Mk 5…

Got to be something German with all that organisation of those small bolts. Can’t be a Lotus, they would have lost half the bits and used some sort of orange goo instead.

It looks like interesting work, Sean And she looks lovely in orange

Can I ask a few newbie questions, please?

  • are you entering the MERS motorsport or production class?
  • which shocks are you running?
  • very roughly, what are you planning to have done to your engine? Just a refresh, or a rebuild?

    Thanks

Mmmm That will be the R&D department at xxxx in China designing a new model

I think Sean said he was away for a while, so here’s what I understand:

  • I believe he has the 42mm(?) Ohlins. Supplier by Plans and widely considered to be best option.

  • Oh very much a re-build, new engine in fact I believe. It should be about as far as you can take a K, but I’ll let him share the details.

Ian

Cheers Ian. Yeah am away until the end of next week, but its 6:20am here and I am awake. lol.

I will be entering the motorsport class. The production class is very strict and to be honest there isn’t much that is “production” on my car.

I use the Ohlis 46mm three way adjustable dampers. Bought and setup by Plans Motorsport. Can’t recomend these guys enough. They are the only people I let work on my car, other than me of course. lol.

The car will go back together initially with the standard VHPD engine, but yes as Ian says I have a whole new K series on the way that is going to be a bit special.
