times round croft

i was just wondering what sort of times you lot get round croft, i made 1m44 in my evo, a good friend of mine has made 1m37 in his westy, i think times btwn the two would be abought right, can anyone help

thanks phil

Phil - welcome and I don’t want to sound too unfriendly…but…why is that of any importance to you?

Most people here do trackdays where timing is strictly forbidden, not just for the sake of it, but for very good reasons of insurance liability. Its usually stressed at the drivers briefings and it is a precondition for all those taking part.

Once people start posting timings up on here and enter the inevitable blagging about who is faster, etc, then it won’t be too long until insurance premiums go up or cover goes down - let’s not even contemplate the insurance guys pulling out altogether…or the trackday organisers could just ban you from their days!

Having seen one hobby of mine ruined by the few (greenlaning), I would really like this one to stay around for a few more years.

I hope this does not sound overly pompous and please don’t take it personally - there have been a few posts creeping in about timing and I really needed to get it off my chest

Well put, Steve.

come on, everybody times themselves on the quiet
1.37 would be pretty good in an S1 exige on ao48’S. Not that I would admit to have done it

Sorry but you are so wrong there…

I video all my tracktime and enjoy playing it back when I get back home, but I have never even been bothered to time them!

If you do then you are truely in a minority. There are those from here that have graduated to racing…you should be following them if you want to watch the clock; rather than risk ruining the pleasure of so many others.

Err, no, that’s not true, Steve, certainly here anyway.

My road insurance covers me for trackdays too, but it wouldn’t if trackdays “osmosed” into test days, & in any event, like most trackdayers I’ve not got the required MSA licence for test days. Any timing, whether in the car or from the pitwall will technically invalidate both the driver’s, & the circuit’s insurance, & will kill trackdays.

I suggest that for those for whom lap times are important, they get an MSA licence & stick to test days.

I know that you know all that, Steve, just pointing it out for the benefit of those who may not be aware of the position viz a viz timing

See ya on the 16th

There is not per se any problem with retropective analysis through video. The insurance relates to real time lap timing to make the distinction with test days as already mentioned. I do look back on the video and am often surprised that laps I thought were slow were fast and visa versa. However, I do not go on trackdays to see what laptimes I can do, I do them to have fun. I will never be a competitive racer and generally, when I am relaxed and not thinking about going fast, I tend to drive better.

Trackdays put a huge smile on my face, which is why I do them. That I have at least inproved to the point that I am not being overtaken all the time allows me to relax and enjoy myself more. If I was a driving god in a fast car, I might actually enjoy myself less by being held up by traffic.

Go out, be safe and above all have fun.

You make some very good points.

I think a barrack room lawyer might point to intent and the offence of going equiped with a video camera for the purposes of timing

I already have to promise to pay Mr Palmer 25,000 (yes that’s no typo!) if any of my footage appears on the internet, for the privilage of filming at his circuits…again if use of these was considered to be timing, it would be so easy to ban them

no offence taken, it just something we talk about. comming from a evo its all about pub figures lol.most of the lads i know have some idea of there times around most tracks.

phil

Good lad, Phil, no offence was meant at all.

In basic terms, many peeps, like myself, love our trackdays for what they are (fast, fun driving), so the thought of them stopping because of avoidable insurance issues, sends us into a state of panic

Look forward to meeting up at a circuit

I was at a track day in my Golf once and a marshell came up to me and said "that’s going real good we timed you at …)
I didnt know what to say.

mr pesky im sure i have talked to you once down at croft before, it may have been someone else but there exige was orange to. it was last year at the ford rs owners club day

phil

Hi Phil

Nope, that wasn’t me - never been on an RS day, & my exige only turned orange (from blue) in July of this year

never mind, he was a nice guy anyway. i hope to be getting one myself this year, pending on court.

That must have been Scuffers then, in the Maidstone demonstrator

As you’re always overtaking people in an Exige there’s no need for timing to know you have the quickest car!

There’s an element of truth in that. Not that I’m racing, just catching up. I’ve never felt the need to time, the Exige is buzz enough.

I’ve never timed myself, or told others what times they are doing (sometimes noted at Anglesey to compare with 5th Gear times).

I never time myself on track days, as I have a feeling that for me pushing harder and harder for a faster lap time is likely to end in tears in the tyre wall. And in any case, the best driver on any track day is the guy having the most fun, not the one putting in the quickest lap times. Re Croft, a guy I was chatting to at a TD there last year (think he had an Evo, conincidentally) was timing a few cars from the pit wall and told me I was lapping around 1.45. That was my first time at Croft though, and I am sure someone better than me could take a chunk off that in the same car.

Mark

As a Ferrari owner once pointed out to me (a bit fed up at constantly being passed by Exiges), the best guy on track is the one that goes home with the leggy blonde!
