C’mon YP, stop sitting on the fence

Crikey, we do I start:

An integrated transport system
Improved social housing
More assistnace for the socially disadvantaged ie: drug users and ‘unwaged’
Promotion of better cultural integration within ethnic minorities

etc etc

Its sayings like that, which drive me MENTAL!

Gordon’s gonna spend it on a new kitchen

The thing that really annoys me about the governments attitude to transport/tax/emission etc is that it just is not rational.

I fully suppport a fuel tax as this is directly linked with the emissions from a car, but the current banding system is ridiculous… a polo driven 20,000 miles a year is clearly producing much more C02 than an Exige driven 5,000…

So by the current tax system the government is not actually encouraging people to reduce their emissions, they are just encouraging them to change their driving habits to comply with bureaucracy…

N/a Exige owners dont have to pay the new 25 Congestion Charge in October due to it only producing 208 g/km CO2, altoough dont quote me on that exact output as I am not sure how reliable the website is that I read it from. Suppose that could be taken as a silver lining although how many people drive Exiges in Central London??!

Is there any way that we can beat the tax increase? Can our emissions be reduced by fitting a lighter updated cat that doesn’t sap power - or any other method beyond my simple comprehension?

If this was possible, could you get the car tested, and the V5 altered to register this reduction? If so, then this could almost be seen as a positive thing that us Exigers are doing for the environment (no, I am not a ‘greenie’).

I would be very interested to see if you guys have any ideas.

One downside though, after a good run, I enjoy stinking of the exhausty-type aroma that (due to stringent build quality ‘standards’ applied to S1’s) tends to wander into the cabin. With reduced emissions, this may no longer happen!

Cheers,

Clive.

This is the bit that does my head in too. I do about 6k miles per annum in the Exige, but about 13k in a Mitsubishi 1.3 Colt- I’ll bet that works out to a similar amount or more CO2s than the Exige, but costs me far less! It needs to be linked to mileage somehow, but I’m not having a blackbox recorder in there- too heavy!!

Exactly, completely agree with you, and that’s before we ever get into the discussion of trusting the UK govt monitoring your every movement!!!

In my mind the “correct” solution is to have higher fuel duty as this is in essence a direct tax on emissions, but to entirely scrap the Road Fund Licence. As far as how much further the fuel tax would go up, it should be a simple calculation to exactly replace the lost revenue to the Road Fund Licence. The total amount of tax does not change, it just end’s up being charged to those who actually pollute the most!

I agree, if you a) pollute a lot you get charged. or b) drive a lot you get charged. so in the end if you drive a lot in a polluting car you pay loads or if you drive little in a fiesta (my Mum) you pay little seems fair all round
Will that ever happen NO as they just won’t see that…

We all know the flip side of the story:

You end up charging those who live in the countryside who have to commute more, which is apparently unfair.

In my mind the choice to live in the countryside is one which brings you more “utility” (aka happiness, by living in nice green fields yadda yadda yadda) and for that extra utility there is a cost… seems entirely fair to me…

FFS don’t get me started on this one…

The only connection between emissions and the increased taxation is that the former is the excuse being used for the latter. It is simply a means to an end; that end being the desparate need of this government to increase taxes to mitigate it’s borrowing needs due to its p1ss poor financial management and wastage. Even then borrowing next year is due to hit 43bn or something like that.

Global warming is yet another similar excuse to raise revenue.

I’m not saying emissions or global warming are or are not issues we need to be concerned about. What I’m saying is that the government are using those long term issues to try and get itself out of the sh1t in the short term.

And they won’t get rid of the road fund license because of the number od civil servants that would be made redundant. No government of any political persuasion would opt for that particular form of self destruction.

I just love the fact that Heathrow now has a low emission zone around it just before they open terminal 5 which will increase flights and pollution which will further increase when the third runway is built (which it will be). What difference would a few dodgy diesels on the Heathrow spur make when you see all the additional pollution being generated by more flights.

This government thinks we’re all stupid, more so than any previous government. And in many ways they’re right because we moan amongst ourselves but otherwise do feck all about it. We just pay up and get on with life and they know that’s what we’ll do.

Excuse any typos here but I can’t be ar5ed to check. I’m off to enjoy driving my Exige home while I can still afford it.

Have a good weekend guys.

HERE HERE to all of the above!!!

Love reading a good Friday afternoon rant.

Yipeeeeee the weekend is here

I agree with the above, but what can we do rather than pay up

Its all just revenue - they won’t get rid of road fund tax by replacing it with extra duty on petrol. Imagine if they did, then we all go out and buy a tesla. No revenue to spunk up the wall on government bloat.

They also hate dual use fuel - electricity, veggie oil, LPGs etc as they can’t easily tax the arse out of them without hitting the poor sod that just want to heat his house or fry his chips.

until the govt stops pissing money up the wall they will not be able to go green as the ultimate green is lower consumption and how would the govt pay for all their biometric nonsense then?

Well said John me old son. Plus I love chips, so they better leave them alone!!!

Might be an idea to spend it on education - would be nice if people could learn to spell

Yipeeeeee the weekend is here

fec me…a couple of hours early for you then, is brummie land is a different time zone?
