The “season” has been a bit slow to start but after Anglesey, the British GT Championship opener at Oulton Park, the surprising bonus of spring sunshine prompted an early Sunday morning ride out to Mitton Hall, near Clitheroe, Lancs where the boss James Warburton, the enthusiastic owner of an Aston DBS, and his staff staged the first of what will be a monthly Supercar Sunday.
At the scheduled start time of 9 am, I rolled into the car park expecting to be well out-classed but found a couple of Porsches, a Carrera GTS, a Boxster, and a Focus RS plus the boss’s Aston. So for rarity value, I was already on pole position.
Soon after, the very tasty bacon and sausage butties were served from under an awning outside the imposing Mitton Hall as the car park filled with all sorts of exotica. And not the normal fare, such as Gallardos, Nissan GTRs etc.
Instead we early arrivals gazed in awe as an Alfa SZ pulled up, soon followed by a Jaguar XKSS( one of only 16 in the world, I believe) and where did you last see one of those used on the road? As far as I know it was an original and thus worth £4-£4.5millon. And, I gather, the owner could have chosen to bring his Ferrari F40. Who said “It’s grim oop north.”? Maybe “Where there’s muck there’s brass” might be more appropriate.
A black Ferrari Scuderia (Reg SCU1) rolled in and shyly parked among the masses. But with a bit of encouragement the owner was persuaded to park in a more prominent position and we all enjoyed the sound of its low-speed manoeuvring, the slightly strangled note of an engine being held in check when it would much rather be heard at full bore through any available tunnel.
Astons were prominent but an aubergine metallic Bentley Continental brought many admiring glances. But my well-used Exige continued to draw the eye and cameras as it nestled between the Bentley and a gorgeous black 911 turbo owned by a Norlog (North West Lotus Owners Group) member.
The Alfa SZ stood outside the throng, to me, simply beautiful in its ugliness, or just plain ugly to those with no appreciation of the work of Zagato. The owner said he had had it in his care for 19 years. I told him I had last seen one parked in Hawkshead in the Lake District and still had the photograph to prove it. He revealed a that on trips to Europe even the Italians struggled to identify the car.
A Daimler Dart SP 250 burbled its V8 up to the front door while Postman Pat called in on his round in his Morris 1000 van driven by a Range Rover fan whose son has just ordered a Ferrari.
My visit was made even more pleasurable by a chance encounter with Exiges,Com member and Edwards’ Honda’d S1 owner SteveE who sheepishly admitted that he would have been in his car but for the lack of an MoT. He promised to rectify that omission by visiting Phoenix Motorsports next week while promising to be more active in the coming year.
The two-hour event offered an extremely friendly and laid-back gathering which will be repeated on the first Sunday of every month.
I attach a link which I hope you can all see and enjoy (No you won’t, it’s crap. see below)
Sounds a fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning you lucky sod, thanks for sharing.
