John, Are the 02M ratios above the closest ones available?? I can’t find my bloody spreadsheet again, but I was pretty sure there was something pretty close.
I stripped 3rd gear shortly after getting my car earlier this year. Not many options with the Toyota Gearbox and it does feel like a 3rd gear time bomb which could go bang again.
I’ve emailed this company about their gear sets. They make some of the most popular Carbon clutches and Diffs for high powered Jap cars used in the Time attack series. By the looks of it they only do gear sets for Honda’s at the moment. I’ve asked if they intend to do a set for the Toyota box. I’m waiting for a reply…
Ade - below is whats to be included in the kit. I factored a new flywheel in because the kits includes a 3.7kg custom one, and to behonest I might aswell while the car is apart. The kit also includes for an uprated clutch, but the standard clutch is quite often the recommended option even for the Honda SC cars which run more torque than ours. Its also looking like the below kit might be less than I was expecting too
New lightweight flywheel ( 3.7 kg instead of OE 7 kg)
New 3 Piece Clutch kit , same as we use on 350 bhp Honda’s
New Intermediate shaft.
2 x New stronger driveshafts.
Hard anodised 7075 T6 Gearbox adaptor plate.
New intermediate shaft bearing and carrier.
New clutch cable brackets
3 x New Gearbox mounts, spacers and bushes.
Spigot bearing
New High Tensile bolts nuts etc.
Wait till you get the price before making assumptions, it might be a lot cheaper, the Jubu upgrade is basically 800 for the gears and 12 hours labour, everything else is extras, personally if people are changing clutches or installing an LSD it is a no brainer upgrade especially if you are adding an LSD.
The worst way is when it breaks before hand, then you might need some bearings as well.
Got a reply…They’ve no intention of making gears for the Toyota box unfortunatley. Oh well!
Jubu gearset is the only choice then unless the honda or audi ones are cheap enough and reliable
Or these…

At nearly $3K I can have lots of second hand gearboxes for that price!

I’ve already got price the ade
Just in case you haven’t read this…:
Guys double check the sleeve on your release bearings and make sure the edges of the bearing race has a smooth chamfered edge, it’s because of a very sharp edge that caused the bearing to bite into the input shaft sleeve just enough to wiggle back and stay there keeping the slave cylinder from filling…
I have a feeling that this may be an issue on Toyota gearboxes with syncro wear, without a full slave cylinder the clutch is not fully disengaged and a quick shift will get a slight snick and then becomes a grind and the syncros are shot…
The slave cylinder needs a stronger piston return spring in my opinion…
Sadly these are also made of cheese
I posted a pic of the bearing, rounding the edge makes a huge differance.
Thanks Frank all good information
WOW…originally posted this back in November last year, and yes the car still off the road!
Some of you probably know that I went down the honda gearbox route which has ended up not being done…although I probably best leave that story for another day!! So now rebuilding the std box with uprated internals.
Anyway, car was collected (in pieces!) from eliseparts last Wednesday to take to doncaster for installing the jubu gearset. By the following day the box had been stripped down (I went over to have a look at the damage), and by Friday fully cleaned and rebuilt with new syncros, jubu gears etc. Should of done this before xmas!
Just awaiting for a new clutch and then the car will be back to together this week. Happy days.
I had read your post on Seloc, sorry to hear of your woes, glad the box repaired easily
Just out ofinterest how many miles did you do after it failed?
I did around 50-60 miles with the broken gear. Apparently its rare for them to damage anything else, although the gears and lsd have to be completely stripped to make sure there is no remains left anywhere in the box.
I did 300 on mine, I am going to get it stripped and put the old gears I got out of my replacement box with new syncros, then sell it, I need the cash
Any more info on the Honda box??
Not really…think eliseparts gave up after the balls up on my car.
Theres garages out there that will strip and rebuild the yota box with jubu 3/4 and new syncros for 1.5k - probably the best option IMO.
I’m reading the Jubu gears can handle 260 lb/ft of torque …
Pity, the ratios were spot on and it would take a hammering.
