Steve Gugleimi - spring rates

With 36mm Ohlins fitted, I did Silverstone GP circuit a week or so ago. The car felt very unstable. Following Jonnyfox/Pete757’s advice I took her to Steve in Daventry, Northants who set the geometry and recommended much harder spring rates.

what spring rates are you ohlins lovers running???

PS - thanks Steve…for those looking for someone who knows their mustard from their cress, Steve is your man!

You’ll be limited on spring rates with the standard 36mmm Ohlins dampers - if they are the Lotus spec ones.

I think you can go 50lb harder without having to revalve the std dampers.

If you go down that route you may be better off spending the cash on new Nitrons and selling your Ohlins.

steve worked out that I’m running circ 325nm when i should be running 500 on the front and 600 on the rear. Massive difference. Curious to know what you guys have…Ibs to NM? not sure. Diameter is the issue or limitation he thinks.

Yup - 325fr and 425rear are standard.

I’m now running 46mm Race Nitrons with 500fr and 650rear.

Some have gone stiffer - 550fr and 750rear

can i get stiffer springs to fit the set up I have? rough cost to upgrade?

No complaints here. Maybe a revalve and a very mild change the end of the year but I like what I have.

I’m very interested Matt to see how bad your car feels on this set up buddy  Maybe worth a second opinion from JSR possibly.

can only go 50lb stiffer on springs - nowhere near the 500 + which most people go for.

Saying that Jonnyfox is plenty quick on his ‘std’ Ohlins and I have learnt recently that going too stiff will have you skating off the planet at high speed

Interesting…currently having mine done at EA…having the standard 325 / 425 replaced with 450 / 575 (I think…) and revalving to suit…hopefully this will firm things up nicely…

Matt

Don’t sell your Ohlins!! Send then to Russ at Mick Garner Racing (they do all the Ohlins work for the factory) and have then re-sprung and re-valved to the 260 cup settings… 80nm front and 105nm rear. You won’t go far wrong! Tell him Gav’s put you in touch and he may well do you a deal with the amount of work I do with him… Shouldn’t cost you more than a couple of hundred quid!

For us old duffers, in old money thats around 450/600 lb/in

I only run 425 550 on my nitrons and that seems plenty to me, I’m not convinced you need to go much harder than that

Let me just put my Nerd glasses on…

Wouldn’t 571lb/in be 100Nmm?

This is what I’m having done - don’t forget they need re-valving to suit.
