Something loose under the footplarte...

Help…

I got something rolling around in my S1. I’ve put a new stereo in and removed the alarm for reprogramming and now something is loose.

Something, maybe a screwdriver tip is rolling across the car on every turn, i thought it was under the seats, but i took out the passenger seat and nothing’s there, it’s definately under the footplate moulding.

I’ve no idea how it got in there, or how i can get it out, the workshop manual wasn’t much help either.

Can anyone help?

Are you sure it’s not something in the dash, or the sill?

I don’t think you can get under the footplate, it’s part of the main chassis.

The floor is a single layer of ali, so anything rolling under that is rolling on the road

If it’s a rather ‘sharp’ sound, I’d reckon to have another look under both seats (maybe use a magnet to locate the part). Also look under the centre tunnel, things can move all the way

If it’s not that, you should have another look in the dash

hmm, i’m pretty sure it’s under the plate, i though the dash was a obvious place as i’d just had the front off, but i can hear it pretty clearly at floor level…and it moves the width of the car when i turn.

I’ll double check anyway, it does make more sence.

Thanks.

Usual thing is the clips that hold the dash together. They break easily. If it’s in the dash, find it soon or it’ll wind up in the sill, sliding backwards and forwards under acceleration. It’s a bugger to get things out of there

Thanks for the help,

I’ve had the dsah open again, but there’s nothing loose in there

I’ve had the seats out and that’s clear too, it really does sound like it’s coming from under the footplate moulding. Does anyone have any detail on how the ribbed step fits to the floor plate?

Have you checked under the centre console?

As I said above, the footplate comes as part of the chassis. I don’t know if it’s possible to remove it. Good luck!

I can’t see how anything large could have got under there.

Maybe you’ll have to drill some holes in it and squirt some gap filler in there to hold whatever it is in place

But the centre control you mean the plastic trim over gear lever? I’ve looked there but nothing’s out of place.

I know it sounds unlikely to be under the footplate, depite a lot of staring i can’t see anywhere else . I may yet end up drilling a hole a filling it with expanding foam.

have you tried using a magnet to see if you can “detect” a metal object?

Yeah, I’ve got one of those bendy things with a magnet on the end, i’ve poked it just about everywhere…

I can’t get into the footplate with it though

i meant running a large one over the top surface and feeling if it attracted something to the underside.

Oh you old smoothie go on then

I’ll give it a go. See if i feel anything.

I was thinking about something like this:

recovery magnet

One(s) from the back of an old speaker(s) should be quite good. The pair I have for such situations are blooming powerful (thanks to dad for his 1970s hi-fi).

Just watch out on trackdays - I’m sure a few of the Exige old timerers have pacemakers

Why didn’t i think of that.

Thanks.

Still no luck

I’ve had the dash apart to double check, but nothing there, it’s definately under the extruded footplate in front of the seats.

Using a big magnet i can move the loose thing around a bit, but i can see no way to get it out of there (or how it can have got in)? It’s sliding the full width of the car on corners, and there might even be a couple of things trapped in there.

Is there anyway into that extrusion?

I can’t imagine how anything could have got in there. Unless there are some bolt holes under the gearstick area?

I think your best bet (assuming you can move the object to the rear of the footplate) is to take a seat out, and drill a hole into the rear edge of the footplate where it won’t be visible. Maybe if the hole is big enough, you can pull the object out through the hole, or failing that you would resort to spraying in some gap-filler.

If there are bolt-holes under the gearstick, you could try trapping the object under there with gap filler, but it’s a bit more work to get the whole gearstick/handbrake mounting assembly out of the car.
