P.S. the Sector figures are based on WHP with a 15% loss for transmission.
They quote, 203WHP before and 230WHP after working on the 15% loss is 230bhp before and 265bhp after which is where the Gotham 265 comes from.
Generally most cars dyno’d seem to give 230bhp as standard (if you believe all you read).
15% seems to be the accepted figure on Lotus Talk for transmission loss on a yota car so your 206WHP is more like 237bhp at the fly working on that figure.
May just be the dyno you tested on and without before and afters its hard to say, also tyre pressure, air temp etc etc can make all the difference.
Sorry for going back to numbers, just went on the sector site as did not know where the 27bhp came from.
As i’ve said a few times now, the figure I got may be a chunk lower due to heat. All dyno’s vary - it’s the age old argument. The only true way is a bench dyno…
The Dyno Dynamics dyno corrects for ambient temperature, so it will be accurate, but what will be a problem is the charge temp the car is seeing as it will back off timing based on these temps. This was clearly happening each run.
I spoke to Ade the other day and said I was thinking of not posting the numbers up for this whole debate reason.
The car is faster, it’s fuelling right, and the throttle now goes fully open. Basic engine management theory tells you that if you have a fully open throttle and the fuelling is right, there isn’t much more scope for power there from one remap to another. Timing has a little influence though, and I don;t know what that is doing.
It feels like 3rd gear was the old 2nd gear etc, which was how Ade put it
This is the last I will say on dyno number or any other dyno discussion
Been reading this thread with interest and am going for this upgrade as soon as sinclaires get some other bits i need in. Just wondered whether you were going with the chargecooler as well or just the ecu / injector mods. Don’t want to start another drawn out discussion of the benefits of water / air vs air/air cooling, just trying to quantify the 2k odd for the chargecooler against performace benefit.
It’s off to the dyno tomorrow, had a false start with the replacement pulley, something to do with the way the engineering company’s measuring system and everyone elses meant the new pulley was only very slightly smaller so made no difference.
I will report back tomorrow when I have more details, we are going to be watching the boost pressure very carefully, there is certain levels you don’t want to go over or something will get scared of the dark
On a side issue if you want to take your power further after the Gotham I would not recommend doing this without the charge cooler, adding the charge cooler will give you at least 15hp and no chance of heat soak. We hope to be running some inlet and discharge temp tomorrow to. With all the testing I have done so far my car even on track has not gone past 15 centegrade over ambient and that was on my 3rd 6th gear pull from 40mph to 120mph on a runway so it was as real world as I could get.
I’m all excited the car is back on my drive, picked it up from Sinclaire with my G/F in tow on my drive home the traffic was quite heavy and every time I had a gap and put my toe down I got a terrible noise in my left ear it sounded a bit like “you keep driving this fast and you will loose your license” blah blah blah, I kind of lost interest at that point
Anyway I need to scan the dyno and charge temp results which I will try to do later, but i must say the car feels faster and has gained the 20HP the dyno showed, considering it was a hot day in the booth I am well impressed with the results.
So what has been done, a new 3 inch SC pulley which is showing about 9.5psi of boost at the highest, the mapping session went well with only a few minor changes.
The downside is the figures are not DIN corrected as the inlet temperature probe at TDi was broken at the weekend and they don’t have a new one yet, on the plus side it was 26 degrees in the booth so the corrected figures will probably go up rather than down.
Final peak hub HP was 261.5 @ 7880 and peak torque was 172lb-ft
I am well pleased with the results and the extra SC whine is fantastic
That is impressive,if your engine stays in one piece (which I hope it does) that’ll be me stage 2 tune after the initial gotham. I salute you for taking on the r&d, sharing the results and blazing a trail for pussies like me to follow later. Would be interesting to see the performance against 911 GT3s at trackdays as the pwr must be similar now.
A GT3 would no be a fair race on the straights however in the corners… actualy in reality you are right it would be a very fair race.
I think Wayne is also going to do an in between pulley of 3.1" for all the people who are a bit scared of doing the full fat version, I know from a few people including some sources at Lotus they did a lot of testing with the 3.0" pulley and the engine will be fine, however as a warrantable and euro emmisions is was a bit risky without the expense of charge cooling etc. I would not do this or reccomend anyone change down their pulley without the correct map and the charge cooler, unless you are realy brave or stupid
Started misfiring (sounded like a dentist drill) and was hesitating badly, then got the flashing CEL and went into limp. This actually happened within 3 miles of me fitting it but it went away and the light went out - I put it down to the ECU learning.
Now about 150 miles later it’s come back.
It’s ok when you have your foot down, although it takes a good few seconds to clear, then it’s off like a shot.
It just doesn’t like part throttle.
Its also stalled a couple of times.
Going to email Gotham / speak to Sinclaires for advice. Maybe needs an ECU reset.
It’s running ok again as I just drive it home, but it will come back whatever it is.
Spoke with Wayne, I’ll be dropping off the car at the end of the year, Katana it is! I’ve been speaking a little with Sector 111 and it sounds very reliable, gains are good and it’s quite a neat job. Thought about Komotech also but it’s so expensive! So next year when you and I visit Germany…?
