i love these exiges.com threads
out for popcorn (no crab cakes in Frog land)
No driving god here.
No actions of abject stupidity on track either
Maybe the numpties should buzz off & buy a paddle shift elise? Or can’t they even read a rev counter

Now I hate to tempt fate… but my cars limiter is at 9k and when caught in the moment on track, it gets there…just! Sometimes, the odd heel and toe has/will over-rev (like that Tim lol ) especially when I used to have to find second in a hurry, something I no longer need to do with a close ratio box. Having no warranty Im in both camps but I sympathise all the same and whist gingerdave gave both barrels I believe yes really its harsh but you need to go on track with your eyes wide open, you just never know…
But Jonny you and your car are very special and there will never be another

Here , here !!!
Why do you all think I am so quiet at the moment. 2012 cars need testing to see if they can go FLAT and there is only one man for the job.
I’ve had more bits and engines broken that anyone with a 2ZZ engine powered Lotus and not one time have I ever fucked up because I didn’t know it was bad to bounce off the rev limiter constantly…
Whoever this chump is he needs to respect the engines limitations and stop with the bullshit of sayin someone said it was ok to buzz the engine to 10,000 rpm.
If you constantly bounce off the rev limiter you need driving lessons and a course in engine dynamics…muppets
Frank, I don’t think the guy was bouncing off the rev limiter, he messed up a gear change and put it into second instead of fourth or third instead of fifth thus over reving the engine.
Most of us have chaged gear many many times on track without this problem but I can understand how it might happen.
The 3 destroyed engine guy is another case. I think oil startvation problems and maybe clumsy driving. I know the 3 engine guy and wouldn’t lend him my lawn mower

I can tell ya from experience of being a repair shop owner in the past that people lie and when they do this kind of thing and put thousands of miles on the engine beating on it there is no excuse but driver error…
Come on any guy knows you don’t drive the car at the rev limit constantly and expect zero engine wear…
I’ve never worn or broken any cam related bits, this guy is a muppet and he has no one to blame but himself…warrantee denied

There is NO defence for driving like a numpty !!! So please don’t defend it !!!

Over-revving means you don’t even know how to try…
…or recognise when the talents are running low.
aka “going fast on track, & reaching your limit? need to snatch a gear quick without checking the consequences? THEN SLOW THE FOOK DOWN” Simples

Obviously Yes I do , compared to yours!!!
The reason the stock cams get wiped out is due to poor valve lash clearance and floating the valves at high rpm… When it says “RED LINE” it means it is at or past the engine design limit, it is not a sugestion that it might be a good time for the next gear…
The oil squirters in the cam cover have nothing to do with it… Low oil pressure will take out the bearings not the cams unless you are runnin the dam engine dry…
Hell the 2ZZ has a hard time draining the oil from the head as it is…
I killed a set of rod bearings due to oil starvation [low oil] in the twisties like a pinhead and my cams were perfect when the engine was torn down…
Agreed Frank. Never had any cam problems and before the engine was on a lotus you would hardly ever read about a cam problem. I believe I only read once of a cam related problem on the 2zz before all the Lotus related issues.
The cams should be checked regularly for valve lash clearance and over revving the engine will float the valves because the springs are just good enough for the stock rev limit.
If a driver mis shifts he has himself to blame not the engine. Can happen but its a user issue not a hardware issue.
To protect against this, people just need to install some uprated valves, springs and oil pump. Bare minimum. If I was tracking my car regularly like many of you do, I would think of it of track day expenses.
Still Lotus should have just installed a baffle and lowered the rev limit on the S which would have reduced the issue.
RED LINE is a bit vague as the Lotus speedometer doesn’t show one, just 3 consecutive flashing lights (on '08 and later models). Would you suggest changing gear when the first of three lights comes on? That will probably set you back below the cam switch point.
