I am thinking of removing the aircon compressor from my s1, after it has been emptied of refrigerant, at the same time as the cam belt gets changed The aircon only works, a bit, when stationary on mild days.
Before I remove it, has anyone ever had the aircon working on an s1? My local aircon man thought it should work as the system is so simple, but he gave up after a couple of hours.
Air Con was never a great success in the S1 BUT, IMHO is an essential summer tool. It gets very hot in the cabin in summer. There was much deabte in the early life of the cars - see here.
Us early owners often referred to it as Con Air rather than Air cOn on the grounds that it was an expensive lie…Mine failed twice in the early life of the car and it certainly needs regular attention but it’s worth its weight in gold when it is working. A search will find much more discussion I’m sure…
To remove the compressor you’ll need to get a non-aircon alternator bracket for a K from a scrappy’s, as the aircon cars use a different version of this bracket. It’s easy enough to do though, and you may as well rip out the rest of the system too while you’re at it
Thanks, that is useful. No fractured pipes on my car, they get nice and cold but no really cold air makes it out of the vents in the car. You cannot tell if it is on or off. If it can be made to work I will try to fix it. It does get like a suna on hot days.
I have an S2 where the aircon works, normally, but has no effect on track days. I assume that is because it cuts out when you have 100% throttle.
Thanks for that, really useful. I had made the assumption that the problem if the hot water is not cutting off to the heater. According to the deroure parts list the s1 exige with AC should have valve to cut the heater water off.

My first port of call is to check if the valve still works. I think it is controlled by the vacuum system that moves all of the heater flaps about.
I thought the same, that the system should really work.It took a lot of years but now works well.
1.I fitted a valve in the water pipe to the heater box to stop any warm air overpowering the cooled air.
2.Had to fit a new evaporator box and condenser radiator as both where badly corroded.
3.All joints must be 100%.
4.Always use recirculate so you’re sucking cooled air into the system.
5.I had my exhaust zircotec coated.
6.The system must always be topped up with refrigerant to the maximum.
The result is an S1 with a bearable interior at worst and most of the time even recently pleasantly cool. What does anyone else think of the new Audi R8 s-tronic advert by the way?
Looks like I have a plan of attack. I would like to get it to work. I am not really worried about the weight, the s1 is seriously light compared with an s2. It was weighed at the mot and was 807kg with me sitting it, (75kg) which makes it 735kg.
Yes indeed, time trial cyclist so need to be light. Too old now. I tried to buy a bid like your avatar to add to my Lotus collection. Lost it to Japan.
I always say the weight saving on a bike costs £1/gram so it gets expensive. Cheap cassette for the gears, £25. Top spec cassette £180. Much easier to loose weight round the waist.
My garage is full of nice, low volume usually British bikes…similar to the cars.
