Roof removal

I’ve had the car for about 6 months ('05) and went to try and fit the soft-top conversion today.

seems the previous owner/dealer had a go at fitting the roof and seems to have sheered the bolts for the allen key, and the only way I can see of removing the roof is grinding the bolts out.

Is there an easy fix? If not, is it easy enough to get replacement bolts?

TIA

seems the previous owner/dealer sheered the bolts for the allen key,

That Pesky bloke will do anything to stop people taking their roofs off !

Do you have a pic of the problem?

Looks ok to me (nearly) - presume you know its not an allen key you need to remove these with?

ur no I didnt! nothing in the manual. Flexi-allen keys seem to fit (to a point!)

whats needed?

Torx (size 40 from memory but memory not that good - expect someone along soon to tell you)… star shaped tool either to fit drill or as a loose key or screwdriver. I got the screwdriver type. Obviously Halfords but most motorist places stock. I have done the conversion (don’t tell Pesky) so if you get stuck (deal easy) mail me.

Cheers Kimbo.

A trip to the local motor shop should do the trick. I’ll have search through the archieves for the right number. The main reason for the roof off is that the missus will be 7 months pregnant when we take it to holland, and the only way I see her getting in and out is vertically! pesky should at least give me pardon for that

Found it …E40 TORX SCREW

No chance. Leave her at home

To me there’s something very Darwinian about someone buying an Exige and then trying to remove the roof, and then thinking the Torx bolts that hold it on are hex.

Darwinian is not the right word,

And also its not a Hex bolt.

there’s something very Darwinian about someone thinking a Hex bolt is the same as a Allen Bolt

with that being the case:-

  1. what is the point of Lotus allowing the roof to be removed, and selling a kit for this purpose
  2. and what is the point of having a forum for those who dont know how things work to be shot down in flames when they do ask.

I’m 7 posts into exiges.com, and dont appreciate this David. Suggest you get out of bed the right side next time

I didnt think ladies were ment to go flying at seven months. Your car will only be insured for two people not two and seven ninths. I remember taking our first one on holiday in the back of our mk one healey sprite, happy days!

Simply practical reasons of building/working on the cars, & most certainly not for driving around with them removed.

Suggest you get out of bed the right side next time

Suggest you take the comment in the jovial manner it was intended and chill out.

Jonthan welcome to exiges.com !

Stick with us - we’re not a bad bunch - a bit sarcastic at times but good spriited - and probably the most friendly forum I know of.

Took the roof off on Saturday and realised in seconds just how loud my exhaust is…

Jonathan,

  1. Glad I could be of help
  2. Not a bad forum but some members can be sarcastic at times
  3. As an S1 and S2 owner (and a few other cars!) - both cars have their merits and disadvantages
  4. You will find some S2 owners crave the ‘rawness’ of the S1
  5. You will find some S1 owners jealous of the fact the S2 roof can be removed.
