- You will find some S2 owners crave the ‘rawness’ of the S1
what blind ones
welcome…its yours to do with what you will!..but grow a slightly thicker skin and theres nothing these guys wont help with and dont know!
stick with exiges and the car…its all good!..and have it your way!
this advert was bought to you by burger king and macdonalds!
and get yourslef booked on the exiges day at Cadwell - with your roof on of course !
- Not a bad forum but some members can be sarcastic at times
Damned by feint praise there - and that’s not actually true - ALL members can be sarcastic at times…but the important thing to remember is that, except for the very odd occasion, we have our tongue firmly in our cheek when we are being so.

The skin is splenty thick enough thanks, but smilies help a long way on knowing if someone is tongue in cheek or not. Just wasnt expecting that from the administrator though so early in my post count.
I know MrD’s comments are just a wind-up, as that seems to be his main mission in life
We’ve no plans to track this car. I’ve got use of an audi s1 elise for that. the wife has always hated the S1, and preferred the refinements of the S2 exige which is the main reason for getting one.
I’ll have to pass on the cadwell day, but having done it a few times, it’s easily my favourite circuit in the UK Have fun!
Hi Jonathon,
I had same problem. There is actually a Lotus key to do this. I got mine from Bell @ colville after they also drilled out the screws. I had the right key but the bolts had been loctited in.
It was about 3.
Good luck. If you go for the soft top option get some waterproof clothing !

Preferrably pink, to match the hair rollers.
Hair rollers! Memory lane eh Pesky!

Yep, live in me own little world…when it always snowed every winter, it never rained in summer, & petrol was all of 5 bob a gallon
I’m currently looking at a soft top conversion for my car. Would be good to take the roof off whilst pootling through town.
Tell me you’re just trying to wind-up Pesky. Please
It always makes me laugh whenever I witness the machismo associated with not taking the roof off what is effectively a hardtop Elise 111R with a couple of (relatively ineffective) aerodynamic enhancements and a few interchangeable bits
There’s nothing wrong with preferring the relatively focused Exige without losing the desire for open-top motoring. For many people (me included), Lotus’s lack of budget to develop a bespoke Exige roof mechanism has created the perfect compromise, at least for n/a Exige owners who don’t have a functioning roof scoop. Nobody questions the virility of Elise owners who drive with their roof off, FFS
FWIW I had an early 111R and went to the expense of swapping wheels, tyres and suspension to Exige S2 spec before realising that then having to retro-fit a splitter, harness bar/harnesses, sports seats, etc. was throwing good money after bad. I then bought my Exige in April 2005, have only ever used it for trackdays, Stelvio, French Frolic, Le Mans, etc. and in 17500 miles I haven’t regretted a minute.
For the technical purists, has anyone calculated the negative aerodynamic impact of removing the S2 Exige roof compared to removing an S2 Elise’s short roof? Likewise the positive benefit of reducing the weight of the roof by fitting (or removing altogether) the soft top? Like MrD, I used to have a car where the manufacturer went to great lengths to reduce the weight of the roof, thereby lowering the centre of gravity. Now I have a more pragmatic solution where I leave it in the paddock!
Welcome Jonathan! Next time you’re out on track in your 300+bhp S1 embarassing most Exiges (roofs on or off!), have a wry smile on me
Hope to see you again soon
Rob
PS. I’ll have my roof off at Cadwell. Ask me IILLIGAF
Nobody questions the virility of Elise owners…
Thats because the answers obvious, just look at Tim …

Hmmmm, he talked of little else on Saturday!
Quite disturbing.

I don’t know how long you may have been lurking on here before posting but you have clearly jumped to the totally wrong impression here.

If I Look Like I Give A F…
Mind you, after all that expense with the 111R (as I am about to do) he really should…
cheers, now not

Steve, just because I don’t post on Exiges very often it doesn’t mean I spend my time lurking, nor did I imply that this board was the only place I drew my conclusion from.
Having said that, I think the (Darwinian) comment back to Jonathan (who may be a ‘stranger’ here but has 3300-odd posts on SELOC) sums it up (not) nicely.
I’ve got an open mind, so please tell me Steve, what is the right impression I should conclude then?
