i know its not exige info i’m after but i’ve just moved house and need to get a 4x4 to see me through the winter as u guys ( AND GIRLS) have all owned various different cars any info on buying a secondhand 4x4 would be well recieved only loking to spend 4-5k, thought about a jeep grand cherokee?anyone know about its plus/neg points?
Do you really need a 4 x4???
I bought a secondhand Range Rover for 26k and two years later only got 9k for it, how about that for depreciation, not to mention the running and maintenance costs…you’ll get nowt for 4k unless youre prepared to spend money on sorting one out!

Not really true if you are prepared to look at an early Discovery, 90 or 110. I agree if you are trying to get a nearly new one from a main dealer but for the same reason you “lost” 17k , the next owner got a real bargain
At the 4k to 5k mark, you will actually get more, as you are in prime territory for a vehicle that will have been owned by one or more enthusiasts who will have spent a bit of money on it - and as we all know here, most if not all money you spend on modding your car is lost at resale.
I would recommend LandRover - easy to work on, parts are not expensive and plenty of backstreet specialists and parts suppliers. Who knows you might get into off-roading which is just as much if not more fun than tracking.
Go and browse the 4x4 mags in WHSmiths - if you need to buy one then I would recommend LRO (LandRover Owner International).
I spent 580 on a P reg Lada Niva, 5th gears stopped working and needing a brake caliper repaired but it is russian engineering at its best. Winter here is no bother to it and if you read some reviews it out performs the Land Rover off road. Its no dream to drive but since I got it I enjoy the exige so much more as I got a constant comparison and quite a contrast it is. Even though its not been the worst winter ever as predicted its nice knowing its there also good to drive and leave in town or in less desirable areas that you youd never leave the exige. And noones likely to reverse into it in town and even if they do it would be like hitting a wall. go cheap, go russian and get one on ebay.

it must have come with a free supply of vodka which you regularly imbibe if you believe that
I wouldnt have another Land Rover for free!!!
i need a 4x4…driving the exige on untreated country lanes is no fun at 6am in the frost let alone if it snows and with potholes the size of bunkers the exige cries in pain.what was wrong with your L.R?

How long have you got???
Simon and Elaine’ll probably sell you a 4x4 for 4k…although you may need to put it together yourself!

from HERE - they might negotiate on price and it seems an awful lot of 4x4 for the money
or even this for well below your target price:

That D90 would easily fetch 17k here in the States! Like new examples sell for 30k!
A model we drool over but the nanny reg.s won’t let us have any more.
I have sold the series 3 and upgraded to a Disco and I love it 1990 200tdi.
lol
the roads arn’t that bad!!
Jeep Grand Cherokee apparently not too reliable and very thirsty.
If you don’t need a big 4x4 have a look at a Suzuki Vitara - you can get two or four door versions and they are bullet proof (currently on my 3rd - in fact sold one for 2750 in March which had only 80k on the clock). They are agricultural (not as much as a Landy mind!) and are actually quite capable off road but don’t consume anywhere near the fuel of the bigger 4x4s.
Cheers
