I believe that the Exige ECU is an EFI unit so it should be programmable given the right software, manual and hardware. I too would recommend an Emerald, not just because you can tailor the fan temperature but because it uses a much better strategy to manage the engine than the EFI unit. This gives much improved calibration when at low RPM/light thottle and when off-cam. A map suitable for the stock Exige engine is available for anyone wishing to upgrade, you will need to patch a MEMS connector to the loom in place of the EFI connector, this is straightforward but tedious.

Couple the Emerald with a set of verniers and correct cam timing and the engine is transformed.

Easiest thing to do is fit a manual overide switch - ok you’ll have to watch the temp, but that’s not too difficult when stuck in traffic ie when the temp starts to rapidly rise!

Assuming, of course, you don’t want to spend 1K on an Emerald/verniers & rolling road mapping

Thanks to both of you for your responses! What’s the cost to convert to Emerald with a set of verniers DIY?

Thanks Rob, you know me and money…

…Big switch it is then

First of all Simon, I told you on the phone that I had repaired the head, you told me that you had it welded becuase you felt that the epoxy repair I made to the waterway drilling on number 4 cylinder might not be reliable, cant argue with that. The hole in that head was at the base of the bifurcation where the waterway drilling was sleeved and secured with devcon. Exactly where you went in too deep as mentioned in the letter.

Secondly, you asked me about roughing out some heads because your income had fallen off following 9/11 and you needed money to finance the work you were doing, fortunately I was not alone at that meeting…

Do you deny that the head that was returned was welded in place of the devcon repair I made to a hole?
Do you deny that you holed a VVC head in the inlet port and had it welded?
Do you deny that you asked me for work when you had no income?

Wake up to yourself man, just admit you made some mistakes and move on.

Most of what you know about porting comes from me, you’ve evne said as much to some of your cronies in the past and to me, the original head was ported after reading my web page as well you know.

extractr from a mail from an owner you know well…

“Excellent results from Steve’s engine by the way, DVA head seems to work pretty well! Simon said something about you teaching him to port heads, I didn’t get the chance to follow this up but is that right?”

Nuff said…

Getting back to the debate, and this maybe a silly question, so, pardon me if it is! Is it possible to get the cooling fans to cut in at an earlier temp with a standard 190 ecu and 82 stat? I don’t know, maybe by manipulating the sensor?!

you could still use a standard thermoswitch (not sure it is the righ word) as used on pre-electronic cars: you place it in the circut (a very “cold” one on the return path from the rad could be a clever move) and drive the fan(s) with it

The VVC head was holed by you Simon, finger pressure was all that was required to put the metal through, that’s why you welded it for free. The seoond VVC head was the same, but I considered welding in the exhaust port to be too unreliable.

The first head was welded, you told me so yourself.

My wife was present at the meeting when you asked me for financial help and suggested you did some head work for some income. I was initally reluctant becaue I said that my customers would expect a head from me to be done by me. Fact is Simon that I felt sorry for your position.

The non existant crank was just pie in the sky…

Just have a look at the crap you have posted, the lies about my visits to Vibration free, the rubbish about Simon Thornleys opinions and Fred Hadleys, the rubbish about the Pistal pistons, the rubbish about Scholar blocks… do you think we have all forgotten?

BTW your argument over heavy metalling was with Steve Butts and was resolved by Steve at Vibration free who’s statement completely refuted yours.

Touring car valves…? shot yourself in the foot on that one Simon.

Wake up to yourself.

Great thread, well apart from the flirting

What about using a standalone relay lke this?

Spot on, I think that’s answer!

Thanks Uldis.

Have you the any idea’s on stopping the two chaps squabbling, its giving my @rse an headache

I dindt meet with Steve Smith at AS 2002, I first met him at his premises. Nor did I meet with you.

You came to my house to discuss it with me, at your request, the first of many visits.

You holed the VVC head Simon because you were heavy handed with the cutter just as you were (and as I mentioned in the letter) on the first head you sent me and on the second VVC head which was holed.

Re-read Steve Smith’s post and tell me what it says about heavy metalled cranks. Show me where I have entered the debate…

Dave

No Simon,

It is your recollections that are wrong as you attempt to rewrite your history.

You and I and my wife know the facts. You can deny all you like, but in your heart you know and I’m sure it consumes you. You can never own up to a mistake unless you are taken to the brink as in the last debacles on here.

Wake up to yourself.

Yes, long time ago they stopped talking about the thermostats and became a dirty laundry thing.
So far Dave seems to think that his word is final and Simon keeps on SHOUTING.

It’s Ok, they need to get things out of theyr systems, but somehow I have the impression they don’t quite agree!

It’s just a circular argument Simon,

We both know the facts, you cant bring yourself to see them.

Dave

I shall be busy building engines for the next few days, try to use that time to calm down.

BTW who do you think is more likely to hole a head, an inexperieced rookie or someone who ports heads all day long and has done hundreds of them?

I think you maybe right, I got the same impression.

Do you think they’ll kiss and make up?

I know, if we change the subject they may forgot all about it…Who watched the football

Ah footie… who won?, I was busy laying tiles…
