Pictures of my 60 litre fuel tank...

For the relatively small amount of money it costs to add a second fuel pump, I am more than happy paying it, so that the fuel system can be future proofed against any possible further upgrades, and so that both pumps can always be working under maximum capacity.

Yes it is probably a bit overkill, but I’d much rather that than find out the fuelling wasn’t sufficient.

Now make sure you have separate relays/fuses and fuel pressure gauge on dash because you want to know if one fails…
I went through multiple fuel pump setup issues in the past…If one fails fuel settings will change so make sure your ECU has a fuel pressure fail safe tune, mine does…

Frank, I cant believe you run a Walbro pump on your car!!! I have had NOTHING but shit experiences with those in nothing more than a 320bhp scooby. As John said we had two fail in very quick succession. Following that I did a bit of research and found a zillion and one horror stories so knocked those on the head once and for all.

As far as 044 pumps go, there are differing specs to be found and here in the UK we always air on the side of caution.

If you look at this american site

http://www.boschfuelpumps.com/

It reckons the 044 is good for 300 LPH at 5 bar, or the equivalent of 600 - 700 BHP (their words not mine)

Then if you look on Bosch’s own website at the specs

http://www.bosch.com.au/content/language1/downloads/fuelpumps.pdf

It shows the 044 will give 200 LPH at 5 bar. So using your American sites maths that figures out to approx 430BHP (which to be honest is kind of where the UK Cosworth tuning industry puts them).

So I dont think it is over kill at all. Lets have 2 pumps both having an easy life, not drawing loads of current, getting super hot etc etc, rather than ragging one pump to death.

And as far as needing loads of air flow goes. They make in-tank versions of both the 044 and the Walbro and they seem to do perfectly fine with zero air flow.

All just my opinion of course.

uhh the fuel is the cooling medium for an in tank pump, when mounted outside the tank they should have airflow… Hey what do I know ?

Aren’t the in tank versions effectively liquid cooled?

It does when it snows!!!

I’d just be happy if the wind stopped…

So you are seriously saying that the surface area of the pump to air - about the size of a can of coke - is a better cooling medium than the 200 litres an hour of fuel passing through the entire pump? Ignoring the fact that the pump is sitting in a hot engine bay in your example? And that the pump is runing half as hard due to splitting the demand between two so not getting as hot?

As I think we all agree that a liquid is a better cooling medium than a gas

Im going to be soooooo disapointed at Anglesey if you turn out to be some 17 year old kid who is really good with paintshop and video editing!!!

Quote of the year…so far

I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to channel air to the pumps anyway, if you really wanted to?

Hey I had to rout air to the fuel pumps on my old RS200E because they were too hot to touch after an hour of running and there were 3 of them… Try a holding pump that has been running for some time and get back to me…

My pump and swirl tank are mounted on the roll bar to rear chassis diagonal where it is in direct airflow from the side scoop…
The location they are in on that tank makes service a bitch and there is no way to get air to them when sealed in by the under tray…Ahh checking for fuel leaks will be fun…now what happened to the previous car ?

Yeah 17 about 4x over…

Be fair Frank you can have a fuel leak from anywhere in the fuel system, we all have hoses going onto our fuel tanks that we can’t see. All of the fittings are proper aeroquip, so once done up, they wont come loose and wont leak.

We have run pumps like this before in this location and they have been fine.

Your RS200 pumps were probably super hot, because you were running three wind screen washer bottle pumps as fuel pumps. We know how you like to get the most out of everything!!

Dude I upgraded the pumps to 3 Bosch 44’s and had to install a naca duct to direct cooling air to them…Oh well as I said what do I know ?
Except expereance has tought me not to make mistakes twice…

its not hard to vent the pumps were they will be sitting to be honest if its a problem. I can think of 3 places to take air from to do the job if needed.

Serious question time. If 2 044’s is too many pumps for 550 bhp, how much did your RS200 have to need 3? :astonished:

Oh just 900 hp… to be totaly honest it would have been more at least 1200 with todays tuning… But for 1991 900hp made it the most powerfull RS on the planet back then and the only evo to be street legal…

Have a look at the naca ducts I installed on the left side and take the time to read the letters, just give them a click… 106
Click here to see where the pumps were positioned so that they could get the cooling air they needed… http://rs200.com/images/106/3.bmp

I’ve been around awhile and have paid my dues…

Thats v cool!!! And I thought that my old boss’s works Mantas and Astra rally cars were cool back then! Bring back Group B and the spectators would flock back to the stages.

No ones saying you haven’t seen and done a load of pretty funky stuff and still are pushing the boundaries. But I guess I’m less brave than you when it comes this to this set up. At the end of the day, I have to be comfortable to say to a customer, yes absolutley one pump will be fine, despite the best advice to the contrary.

You know what they say… Those that can do … dispite the best advice to the contray…

I’ve been provin those advisers wrong for a long time, I’m sorry I had a 10 yr. gap between 96 and 06 and went sailin instead…

Hey, dont be sorry you went sailing for 10 years! I’m sorry I’ve not been properly for a while longer than that!!

And we can. And do. Pics and details to come shirtly

Frank does remind me of Simon Erland
