Oulton Park

Whats a good lap time of Oulton Park, what do the LOTRDC guys do it in ? Just wondered as I wouldnt mind having a go at racing maybe in the future for fun and dont really want to embarrass myself ?

Also, if timing isnt allowed at track days how come you can use data loggers and stuff ? Isnt this the same thing really ?

David

Briefly, “Timing” on a trackday is a great big no, no - it invalidates everyone’s insurance ie circuit owner, organiser, & participant. The “no timg” rule includes looking at times on data loggers/videos whilst at the circuit on the day, & also “publishing” them (times) after the event.

Last year’s LOTRDC results are here: http://www.elisetrophy.com/Results/S1/Summary

Thats what I thought but I saw a couple of people yesterday plugging in lap tops to look at data. Weird.

Thanks for the link, they are quick guys …

What about if someone is on the pit wall with their Chrono watch at the ready…

Surely them telling you after the session has ended what your lap times are is not against the rules ?

They do say any kind of timing … so I guess they include that.

Good job Jonny didn’t see them , or he would have taken the appropriate action!!!

Correct. To achieve any sort of ‘competitive’ time, you’d have to disregard just about everything explained at the driver briefing at the start of the day.

I love to extend myself & the car on track, but would have no hesitation reporting anyone driving like a tit (or a racing driver ).

I think someone from a well known NW Lotus forum was criticised for a ‘stopwatch at the pitwall’ type incident recently.

As Tim says - if a spectator is caught timing eg watch or mobile phone, they will be severely reprimanded, or told to leave the circuit.

There’s no “ifs or buts” I’m afraid. No one can take a risk with the insurance cover. Personally I really can’t see a problem with not timing - trackdays are about having fun, & not competition (even with yourself), but if that’s what you* want, stick to test days/racing.

  • not directed at anyone, just using “you” as it sounds better than “one”

Out of interest then, if you get a couple of totally clear laps how hard do you push on public track days (be honest) ? Do you drive right up to your talent limit or 70% of it, or … ?

Maybe they were having a ‘test day’ during a ‘trackday’

I’ve often seen testing being done on trackdays (not in anyway connected with LoT though).

I’ve seen dreadfully slow drivers that you could ‘time’ by the phases of the moon

Well, i don’t want to trash my car, but due to my limited talent I’ve had a few high speed moments on track in my time, which couldnt happen without pushing.

I find that if i cant push me or the car, then its a bit of a let down. Traffic is usually the issue, so if the pass by consent rule is ignored by the guy in front I back off & try again. Sadly the sessioned days aren’t too good for this as you can’t plan your own time on track.

I wouldnt want to ruin anyone elses fun either…

I judge my lap times by either

  1. being caught by similar cars = too slow

  2. catching others up = much better

Actually thinking about it … maybe they werent looking at lap times, maybe it was something completely different.

The reality is there is plenty of timing/logging going on on most trackdays.

That’s worrying then … I take out extra insurance for my track days to protect my car. Does this mean it isnt worth the paper its written on ?

Just as long as it’s for private consumption at home, that’s okay.

As said before, if people ignore the rules, there will be no more trackdays because the Insurers will pull the plug. I for one don’t want that to happen, & would have no qualms about “grassing” someone up to the TDO.

By testing do you mean “timing” or something else?

I agree with Pesky.
Cut it out guys
If you get caught timing the whole track- day scene could come tumbling down. …the circuits have enough trouble with the noise police and H&s rules so we dont want selfish “timers” ruining it for the rest of us… .
SO NO TIMING PLEASE.

I’ll admit to running a data logger in my car at track days for my own consumption when I get home. No means of checking the data while at the circuit.

Although this does give me lap times when I get home, I find the lateral G readings most interesting as it allows you to see which corners you have nailed and where you could have pushed a bit harder.

As said above on the day I find who I’m catching and who’s catching me the most indicative of how I’m doing. If it didn’t come on a trailer I’m not fond of it catching me

Re testing at track days. There has definitely been a lot more of this recently. I’d say that the MSV run days have been the worst. Lots of racers using them as cheap test days. The test day etiquette doesn’t mix well with track days. I’ve passed people down the staight and pulled behind a slower car so as not to be out braking them only to have the cars I’ve passed earlier come past under braking and turn in sometimes two abreast and hold me up for the rest of the lap.

I was doing 2 mins dead last year in my S1 Exige…(177bhp VHPD)

I think the Honda Class B cars were around 1.55 last year, class A were 2.05 or so if I remember correctly.

So…somewhere around the 2 minute mark is going pretty well I think.

Testing really, but I’m sure their ‘testing’ also involves ‘timing’
