Has anyone removed the twin lotus oil coolers and replaced them with a Laminova Oil to Water cooler. If the Laminova can cope then i presume the advantages of weight loss and the reduced risk of damage could be worth it.
I have damaged one of the threads on mine so need to repair/replace one anyway.
Merry Xmas
Mike
Oh i also thought i might put a triple pass rad in to help cope with the extra cooling duty and remove one of the fans
I suspect not many have done it, other than racers as the system is less prone to accident damage.
I spoke to the factory about having it done but didn’t bother in the end. The laminova set up does look the business & will save a bit of weight too, but i’d only change if the standard coolers were fooked.
Ive changed the coolers out as part of the g/box upgrade (1 laminova for the engine and 1 for the g/box - both running off the front triple pass rad).
Yes less weight but your now asking 1 system to do the work of what 2 seperate systems did… (does that make sense??)
Benefits are that the oil comes upto temp much quicker but downside is that the whole system runs hotter - Where you would have seen 88 on the water you now seeing 94-96 on the gauge while on the move and when your stationary it will easily see 104+ on the clock.
Great for a track/race car where you have minimal time to warm the car up and the car is moving all the time but probably not the best system if your going to be stop start in the traffic.
I have tried to repair my oil cooler and failed due to the aluminium quality or the fact it has been soaking up hot oil for 40000 miles, so its back to the laminova idea.
A few pic’s of how it is coming along.
Oil coolers now gone, thought the now redundant oil pipes would do for a charge cooler.
Hi Mike, have you deleted one of the fans for a reason?
I ask because the factory laminova set-up retains both fans (one is set to go off at about 98ish and the other switches on about 110ish… Cant remember the exact figures)
As I mentioned earlier, since having the laminova’s installed the car runs hotter and just sitting around in the paddock for 5 minutes with no airflow over the rad will raise the water temp to 104+ and the first fan is chirping away. Cant imagine what it would be like stuck in traffic in town on a hot summers day… you may want to reconsider putting the 2nd fan back on.
Hi Gav
No real reason for removing a fan, read on here a few people were running a single fan set up on normal rads with no problems so thought as i have a triple pass i should be ok even with a Laminova. I have done a little test in the garage, warmed it up to about 10deg (air temp) then left the car running and the engine temps got to about 99 the fan cut in and it dropped to about 87 and the fan went off. Will keep an eye on it when the weather gets warmer, if i have to replace it it should only take 3 to 4 hours now i know what i am doing with the clam.
Few more pics, it should be ready for a road test tomorrow.
Had a few blasts out in the car and i’m very impressed with the Carbone lorraine brake pads so far. A track day will test them properly but on the the road they are great.
Hey Mike so how’s it going with the Laminova mate? What was the weight saving and did you remove both fans in the end?
Cheers, how small is your rear wing btw
All seems to be well, it got a good test at Oulton and the water temp never went over 96 and generally ran at about 89-90.
I still have one fan which has come on and seems to be enough to get the temps down on hot days in traffic.
I have not weighed the bits that came off but i did weigh the car and it is about 15Kg lighter than when i bought it.
