We’ve organised trackday at Cadwell Park on Wednesday 16th August. It’s open pitlane, full circuit, 105dBa and cost is 140. There’s a few of us going on here already; me, TarmacT, Peskaloid, Simon E, pearman00 that I can think of off the top of my head.
The day is open to Lotus On Track now and will probably fill quite quickly. If you fancy it you can book online through Motor Sport Vision here:
Call GKN’s motorsport division and get yourself some proper shafts made up. I was talking to Russ about this at Silverstone. Make sure you explain to them exactly what you want and the angles that the CV joints have to deal with. That way they will make some to spec and you wont brake them ever!! Modding the standard item obviously just isn’t the answer with the amount of trouble you Honda boys have with shafts. The GKN folks are very helpful.
The shafts on Russ’s car were not like any GKN Motorsport shafts I have ever seen. They just looked like modded standard items. Yes I know GKN make a lot of OE stuff. But I know of several people who had special requirements due to excessive shaft angles and GKN Motorsport have made up one off shafts with special CV’s and they have never had a problem again.
The real problem is with the fitting of the CV boots, which move on the shafts (due to the angles), enabling the grease to “escape”. Investigations are under way
I don’t believe that to be correct mate. The boots on Russ’s shafts were blown up like balloons due to the grease and air inside them heating up to the point finally that it blows the boot off, all the now liquified grease runs out and the joint siezies.
My GKN shafts are not secured at the shaft end to enable any hot air to escape.
At the end of the day the standard CV’s are not designed to run at the angles that they run at, and I know GKN Motorsport have parts that will do the job.
Oh and before anyone starts I’m not dissing honda conversions in any way shape or form, I think they are ace and Russ and his car especially!!
On my GKN shafts the boot is held onto the CV joint on both the outer and the inner, but the shaft end of the boot does not have any retaining clip. Its a pretty snug fit, but none the less there is a gap. However nothing has ever oused out of them.
On Russ’s car at Silverstone it was the outers that we had problems with on both sides. The one failed after qualifying. We changed that and checked the other side, but after the endurance it was blown up like a baloon
I will be coming up from the sarf for this, staying in the www.blackhorse-donington.co.uk as its only 30 ink brekkie and they have good beers :up Cant afford the Admiral Rodney that NYLOC have organsied.
