Pleased to report it cures the “long pedal” experienced on track with 4 pot fronts & standard rears
Okay, only did a couple of 15-20 min sessions at Oulton today, but the brakes were awesome!

Thats excellent news Rob!
Now you can remove the wooden blocks from the pedals!

Must have missed you today Rob. Was at Oulton today at about 3pm for a bit of speckletating

Think I left about 3pm, Graham. Didn’t want to tempt fate - twas only when the sun came out during the lunch break that I decided to do a few laps (ta Mr Golding), but was of course “uninsured” as I’d not pre-arranged it. Then wanted to be back Chez Pesky for a couple of scoops whilst watching the footie
Hope the family is well, & see ya on the 11th April
The weather was very kind today, glad all is now well with the car.
Didn’t manage to get down till 3pm due to the little fella, he’s very demanding But a little diamond!

Looks like it might be a trip to see Uncle Martin

Yep, Benja needs to also

Yep - that’s great news Rob. I’ll have to give Martin a call.
I know that in the main the brakes were still there but as my foot approached the boards I just lose my bottle …can’t tell you how happy I will be to get rid of it for good
is this the motorsport brake cylinder??

Nope, we tried that one last year & it made no difference. The Motorsport one comes from Lotus, & you need to also buy an additional clutch fluid reservoir, & additional brake lines too. (Don’t know what Lotus recommend for S2 though).
I’ve got the Eliseparts one in my garage, & I’ll sell for 25 plus p&p - less than 4K miles use. It would be ideal to replace the S1 oem for someone with the oem calipers, particularly bearing in mind the age of the oem master cylinders now!

Ah ok, i’ll scrub that one then! When you say new brake lines do you mean new copper ones?or just braided lines? How much was it all in from lotus?
Marc
Brake lines - new braided lines/couplings to join existing copper ones (adjacent to master cylinder, not calipers) to the new cylinders.
Price - I honestly don’t know as we ordered 2 sets (& a new clutch cylinder for me) to be delivered to the Edwards Boyz (that’s where invoice went also), & they fitted them whilst doing service/geo. The braided hoses/coplings were sourced by Martin, rather than coming from Lotus.
I’ll give adrian a ring at lotus, and see if he can pull together a parts list and prices then
marc.
I would honestly like to know if anyone who has had 4 pots on the front put on considers the braking performance to be hugely improved.
Ive thought abut having AP 4 pots on the front but from what ive seen if anything the rear needs more braking and the front is fine.
Being in mind I raced in the 1st year of the Lotus Championship, and my exige nearly won the Inaugural tuner GP. Scuffers and Randy still seem to think that the standard front calipers are fine, but more rear brake grip would be beneficial.
would be nice to know, or if anyone has had 4 pots on the front I would appreciate a go.

Good question … A lot of debate over this …
I think the extra pad area for keeping temperature down may be a big reason why the 4 pots seem better.
I found adding ducting to the centre of my AP discs made a big difference, as did changing the RS-14 when they were half worn … Hence why I think its a heat issue …
I’m also thinking I need to look at new brakes now as the speeds ( on straights ) are so much higher, yet the driver is still the same so corners will be similar
However I’m reluctant to disturb the balance as well, so would also be interested to hear comments, although I think the MSport package is probably the best way in reality … ( 4 pots front, 2 pots rear )
Edit - add a seperate handbrake caliper for road legal reasons
AFAIK Randy & Scuffers use different pistons in the OEM front calipers, but that aside, if they are happy with the 2 pots as being up to the job, then I wouldn’t argue.
However, I’d already fitted AP 4 pots, before being aware of the above…
Since fitting the 4 pots, my perception is that the car brakes better (on track), even when I was experiencing the long pedal travel (that didn’t affect braking per se, but buggered up heel & toe). Last week with the new MS brake cylinder, they were simply awesome (but I was using RS14 pads for the first time too!).
Now, with many things when track driving, confidence in your car is all important - so perhaps the OEM setup is in reality equal to the MS one, but I was expecting the 4 pots to be better, so they were! I’m sure we’ve all heard the stories of professional racers, who complain about setup to their engineers, who then in turn pretend to make adjustments, & the driver’s lap times improve!!! The placebo effect
I prefer the look of the 4 pots though!
Well I’ve had simialr issues and I’m still on standard 2-pot calipers. As Rob says, it’s about condidence in your car and I’m just not happy with my set up.
I’ve had a new Eliseparts master cylinder (thanks Martin) and Randy is going to rebuild my existing front calipers when the car goes to him for ahem…a few other bits. I’ll also speak to Randy about the cooling point that Andy made.
Clicky for Hofmann’s Caliper Refresh Service
So I guess I’ll be a guinea pig for the 2-pot setup since it looks like Rob/Martin have found something workable for the 4-pot setup.
I’ve been watching/shooting Randy/Scuffers racing Loti for 4+ years on standard calipers so I’m happy to throw another coupla hundred quid at it.
I guy I know in Germany who races a low drag E Type has modified the standard girling 2 pot calipers with titanium piston “caps” to avoid heat soak into the caliper.
Then again he also made titanium hubs to avoid the heat transfer … all for the cause of being “standard” for regulation reasons
Anyhow the Ti caps seem a nice idea …
I went for a half day at Bedford with Tap this afternoon to see how the brakes were after the new master cylinder so here’s an update :
Got stuck in traffic on the way there and arrived with only 90mins of track time left
Didn’t get black flagged for noise thanks to new exhaust
Don’t recall using the right-hand indicator despite driving like a numpty
After months since going on track I reminded myself what an awesome car I have
Brake pedal actually reached the floor I think after 20mins - quite disconcerting
Safe to say it’s no better. Next step is a caliper refurb.
Ben
Get some ducting to the inside of the discs, just like Uldis did - or just have the hose finish close to the inside of the disc - Im convinced it makes a huge difference
