Apologies if this has been discussed to its death before.
I am intrigued as to what gains can be made on an NA 2ZZ engine apart from the obvious air filter/ exhaust route.
I’m especially interested in any experiences of “built engines” or higher displacement engines, performance gains to be had, reliability for track use, firms that carry out such work and costs involved.
I have seen the American thread about insane power out of a NA engine but want to know if there are some real world experiences out there.
And no, SC isn’t the answer!
I feel my resolve to not start modding starting to slip. Meh.
Unless you have very deep pockets then you aren’t going to see much more than 200. Full exhaust, intake and map. Had piper 285 cams in mine and that increased the torque, particularly in the mid range, but not peak power.
I love you man in between being stuck in Spain cleaning up sick and my better half now at home enjoying the welcome back curry…I happened to be on
Well I’m kind of Forrest Gumping my way through this… to a point.
Getting the obvious out of the way and a map, under advice from JSR wllh have fitted new gears and ratios before any head work. Generally it’s agreed that you’ll spend a lot for very little gain. I think all you and I may have read is pretty much all we may expect from a 1.8 engine. Weight reduction really is key as under 6k our cars really are quite…erm wheez-E!
Shame really, as weight reduction, whilst great means one would lose day to day drivability. Will look closely into the gear ratios. Makes sense for track work but then isn’t it worthwhile saving up the pennies and going Honda way eventually?
We need to talk about how I can lose some more weight. Sensibly.
Yep superchargers are the best unless you have deep pockets and\or are stupid (hi Jonny! ) just think about it and it makes perfect sense
If you really want to go down the N/A route have a look here. http://www.monkeytuner.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3060
I agree Super charging is the way forward to cheap power on a Toyota lump. Its proven, it works and it is much cheaper than building a very peaky NA motor.
You say you want to keep the driveability, well that has a super charger written all over it. Powerful small displacement NA engines are horrible things to drive on the road, with very small powerbands, without a suitable uber close ratio gearbox, they are a pain in the bum.
Dont listen to Jonny, he is weird. Get yourself a charger!!! Talk to John, he will have one bolted on while your car is with us
I suppose it’s just a question of how far you want to take the reduction. My car weighs 860kg and I think it’s great. Again any of us can reduce weight removing replacing the obvious stuff but when AC comes into it and then lighter body panels etc it tends to lose it’s appeal with most.
I like the extra inputs needed driving my car and for now with more weight ruduction I’ll stick with it. When my driving improves and after lots more tuition…who knows. I’d like to get to 845kg by April next year and with the new gear set…depending on budget
Supercharger makes our cars so much more driveable so you can spend more time on handling input instead of fighting with the gear stick and engine to keep on cam.
Jonny has N/A blinkers, and yes i totally agree with a S/C you spend less time worrying about which gear you are in leaving you more time to get your lines right.
Both the above are bollox you can do all that regardless with practise and tuition…lol but maybe not as easy
Just need to edit in case it reads aggressive…it’s not btw and I’m no NA Guru nor am I fighting a cause I just like my car a lot and want to be different.
