Magnesium Wheels - The new batch..

Those wheels look great have you any pictures showing a side view…

Some more pics of the mysterious compomotives. I think the rear rim is 0.5inch narrower. (front is same) So for all you retentive perfectionists out there, these are probably a no go. I suppose it depends what you want to use your second set for. Mine are for winter & wet tyres, so I don’t think 0.5 inch makes bugger all odds. I’ve looked at them from all angles too, and they sit in the arch just the same. The guy I got them from used to track day an Exige, and had the wheels made for it, so I don’t know if they were a special of some sort, or off the peg.

Well the wheels have gone back and a refund on the way.

I now need to look for a third set. Hopefully third time lucky

Not that it helps you much, but the tyres on my new magnesiums have stayed inflated for a few weeks now…

They have stayed inflated on mine as well but i’m sure Steve doesn’t want to know that.

I have been reading the thread for a while now and after some homework have come to the same conclusion that everyone probably did years ago !! and that is there arn’t many wheel options for us S1 owners…

A recent discussion with a Lotus owning designer (friend) came up with an idea! (If it’s been mention before then just ignore this post !) We discussed agreeing on a wheel that a few S1 owners like and would be prepared to run on their vehicles and to aproach the manufacturers about a bulk purchase. The slight difference is that vertually any wheel could be choosen and before the CNC machine milled its offset and drilled the blank for the specific PCD a batch of lotus measurements could be fed in to produce a batch of wheels especially for our cars.

No high tooling costs, no expensive moulds etc just using a good wheel blank and making it lotus fitment before it gets drilled for a Skyline !!

Maybe even a set of 18’s for the rear and 17’s for the front ?

I am sure there is a very good reason why this has not been done, and i guess the next post will be from a mould/tool maker who at this present moment will be cringing at the thought…

So would be interested in peoples views …

I’d be up for a group deal on the TMS forged alloy ones. Already have correct PCD, look beautiful and are the lightest and strongest around. There’s also room for a substancial group discount (~20% I believe). Would that be better than getting some bespoke made in the UK?

What do these look like ? Is there a link to them ?

Links are in this thread

Hi again, i can’t find the TMS wheels only the TMR !! Where exactly on the thread should I be looking…
That members own web site is amazing very informative about everything lotus…

I meant TMR. They were originally called KMS, so I decide to mix the two together to confuse you. Sorry

That’s OK then, i thought it was me as i had been looking through the threads over and over again for this illusive wheel !!

Hi all,

I know my posts are few and far between; don’t get much chance to log on. Do follow what’s going on when I can though.

However… PCD’s: I wonder sometimes whether we’d all be better off deciding/agreeing on what the most widely used PCD is out on the shelves and get new hubs made up to suit. Wouldn’t need to have the splines cut for the front hubs so could mitigate some cost and I’m sure with careful design and material selection we could keep the same hub OD so that they would fit inside the current brake discs. Would however need the bells of the discs re-drilling to the new PCD at a 45deg rotation from the existing stud holes… and a ‘want’ to get the wheel bearings changed.

The disadvantage - the cost of the new hubs and associated work

The advantage - the ability to buy off shelf wheels at lower costs than the premiums currently paid for S1 wheels.

Summary - possibly similar outlay, but a whole host of wheels to choose from, uincluding the eBay selection, slick fitments etc etc.

Any thoughts?

I may have spoken to soon about my Mag alloys… I found a rear tyre only had 8psi on Saturday… arse.

Bummer. Put it in a bath of water and look for bubbles where the spokes join the rim.

I know its very much a remedial action but I’m sure I have heard about a sealant product for porous metals - if its not tyre or valve…

Yes it’s called a REFUND.

I appreciate your experience was less than positive, I’m just thinking of what could be done with an otherwise “scrap” wheel(s).

I asked SteveG the same question Steve, but he pointed out that if the wheel is porous, then one has to question how sound it is structurally.

mmm - I hadn’t thought about that - had missed the obvious there!

checked mine now and one of the rear’s has zero pressure, not happy looks like ill be on the phone to speedline
