Magnesium Wheels - The new batch..

Bar one exception (raised by Pesky I seem to remember ), I am not aware anybody has reported any problems (I discussed it with AndyD at Donny). I’ve had the same bearings for 16,000 miles, dozens of trackdays, over half with the mags.

Gav Kershaw (the exception) changed back to the std Rimstocks on his race car because he was cooking bearings. He was obviously travelling much faster than mortal man, big bigger brakes, etc. He is the same man that needed to change his std pads after 2 hours in the Exige S at Donnington last weekend, and have you seen in the Donny gallery how far he manages to get the front wheels stuffed up inside the arches. That boy can brake!

There seems to be a similar myth on rear spacers for the Mags. I use them, most don’t and no problems have been reported. There was even a recent concern that spacers may actually cause a problem but nobody using them seems to have had one.

I use spacers,and no problems

Its not a myth that its a very poor engineering solution and the added issue of how the wheels locate on the flanges should be of some concern to all

Just to put a cat amongst the pigeons… not to say I’m right though!

I think the wheels will be S1 Elise sizes, i.e. 15’s and 16’s, not the exiges 16’s and 17’s… unless thay have 2 batches running through - elise ‘and’ exige. Only reason I say is that I have been in regular contact with David at Speedline for around 18 months on this subject - I wouldn’t be suprised if they are doing both though, just in case we are all talking cross purpose… should take the oppurtunity to point out they are sponsoring me. Piper Cams too for the second season too

Sorry Steve, I meant the problems with/without spacers and the Mags, I just haven’t heard of any.

I know you hate spacers them, but hey, we didn’t spec the wheels!

RE: Spacers.

Was worried I would need them, as when the car is jacked up to fit the wheels, the inner edge of the Speedline fouls the handbrake cable shroud. However, when you drop the car off the jack and the suspension compresses, it moves clear about 5mm.
No sign of rubbing either after some track action. No spacers.
Intend to adjust the P-clip to get a bit more clearance.

Hi All,
I was running a set of relatively heavy after market rimstocks/teamdynamic exige replica’s on my car at Donnington along with a set of 15mm spacers front and rear(used as PCD adaptors) and i was frying the bearings allround after 6-8 laps. i have the MMC brakes and was literally standing on them lap after lap never lost my brakes but had to come in due to severe bearing wobble…oh yes and a black flag !!!

I’ve never heard of bearing wobble. What does it feel like?

Ian

Point Noted !!
Very poor description I agree. When hot/fried they started to vibrate which could be felt through the steering. on cooling they went back to normal and on the road they are as they were B4 the track event absolutely normal no vibration.
When pulling into the pits burning could be smelt coming from the bearing/hub area accompanied by a liquid grease bubbling out of the hub/bearing area. i run no centre caps on my alloys so this was easy to see!!
I have now purchased some very expensive red jelly like racing spec CV grease. I think this just means it costs 5 times as much, but will find out shortly at the next track day…

I didn’t think the cooling on the MMCs was great. You tried anything else?

how do you use this CV grease to fix a bearing ?

spoke to speedline today and the wheels wont be made till mid June now. I ordered these in January aswel but i guess another month wont hurt. They are doing the Exige sizes and he said a guy has ordered a set for an elise, i assumed he was refering to Elise size wheels aswel but didnt ask.

Hi Chaps,

Yep, both sizes in manufacture then. I can confirm the S1 Elise size.

Steve

I won’t confuse things by saying that when they arrive, the barcode sticker on the box says Elise, when in fact they were the right size for the Exige.

Dave really knows his onions when it comes to wheels. When I ordered mine, he reeled off PCD, offset and sizes just like that, from memory. S1 Exige wheels must account for all of 0.000000001% of his annual sales!
Needless to say, was very impressed. He’ll see you all right.

Exige wheels on an Elise(both S1) will RUB,I tried it although yes the Elise was lowered to Lotus motorsport spec, they wouldn`t turn! so i think you would have get an angle grinder big time to the arches

The Exige wheels are now ready and ive just got mine through the post, just need some rubber round them now.

I haven’t heard anything from Speedline… I think I need to drop them a line. Thanks for the update Chris !!

(BTW… Have you seen X1GE K is up for sale again !)

(BTW… Have you seen X1GE K is up for sale again !)

are you sure…its now on my car???

Sorry, by X1GE K, I was referring to the car that carried that plate previously

…panic over then
