Larini exhaust for S1 - known issues re: diameter?

Hello @ll

Im still looking to replace my janspeed exhaust (which is from an elise, small diameter and too short end pipes  )

My Lotus dealer wants to talk me into a milltek becuase he says milltek would fit perfect, performance-wise. I’ve had a milltek on my previous Elise S1 and was happy with it. But on the Exige I want more sound, noise, grumbling, roaarr etc. - and for my taste the Exige milltek is definitely too conservative (heard one on the british car meeting here in Switzerland last sunday…)

I wanted to go for a larini, but in an older thread here >>clicky<< there seems to be an isue with the diameter being only 2.00, are there any news about this? What’s the original diameter of a stock S1 ehaust? I dont want to strangle the breath, you know

Please let me know about your experiences with your exhausts, thanks

Ive had a Larini on my S1 for 4 yrs.The inlet is only 2.00inches but mid-range is v.good and the top end hasnt been affected at all.It still sounds good with none of the buzzes etc most Exige exhausts get as they fall to bits.

thanks - I was interested in any issues regarding performance, I’m sure it sounds fantastic  I’ve read in an older thread that the 2.00 diameter was not that good performance-wise. Probabely I’ll just try it  Thanks for your reply

If you buy the longest/biggest diameter
as I did ,it was a bu** to fit the brackets back into their mountings…sound was good though.
Good luck

I have rung Larini and they will have an S1 exhaust with 21/2 inch inlet available in the new year.I will be getting one!!

thanks - just conatacted them to put me on the waitlist

just got a mail from larini:

… one is being tested now so hopefully will be ready for sale very very soon!..

there is hope…

Just had an email from Larini; 2.5’’ system could be available as early as next month …

I’m getting one of the first quieter 2.5" ones, due to be delivered next week. (Think they call that one the RoadSports, but I was having so many conversations about back boxes last week I could have that wrong!)

With my not-so-new-but-finally-now-working-properly-I-hope engine I will be looking for 245bhp from a 1900 K, possibly a bit more. I will be able to let you know whether the Larini does the biz in a few weeks, if you are able to sit on your hands for a bit. I also have their manifold with 1.75" primaries (4-2-1) and a 2.5" decat pipe is coming as well. I may resort to a silenced decat pipe if it won’t pass at Bedford and Combe, but from the figures they gave over the phone, that oughtn’t be necessary.

Mike - whats the update on your exhaust?

and can i ask how you are getting up to 245bhp?

Hi Paul,

I did get the exhaust albeit a fair bit later than I’d expected, but thankfully still in time for the mapping session at Emerald in mid April. David at Larini got the stops out when needed, so I was grateful to him for that. We got 241bhp which is not a bad result even if it didn’t reach my optimistic target figure of 245+. As Dave Walker observed, it’s still a decent result for a transverse mounted engine with twisty exhaust compared to a Caterham.

However the exhaust tailpipes were too short so the box had to go back again to have that rectified, but finally in latish May I had the exhaust back on the car and it was time to do some shakedown road miles. They went well but I spotted a couple of installation snags so it was time to take the car back to the workshop to have those sorted. With work commitments it was a few more weeks before the day arrived to go down there… then the immobiliser failed! I’m now waiting for my next chance to take the car back in.

The exhaust hasn’t been noise tested but it seems quieter than the Edwards back box, which in itself wasn’t noisy, so I’m hopeful that it will pass at Bedford.

Re the engine, it’s a full-house race engine with forged steel rods/pistons and heavy metal insertions in the crank for balance. The head has been ported and has Piper 1444/1438 cams. I bought it used at the start of last year and have spent the intervening period getting it installed and working properly. I’ve spent a lot less than it would have cost to build an equivalent engine from scratch, but as you can imagine I’m absolutely itching to get the last snags squared away and then get out on track!

Mines on the way.I asked for it to be on the noisy side as I have a silenced cat by-pass.

Mike, so good to hear. I would consider a Larini in future, or I may custom make one in NZ here.

Would love to hear your engine with the Larini on for comparison.

Good news on the spec too, your engine sounds like a 1.9L version of my engine. I’m aiming for about 225bhp, and if you’ve managed 240+bhp with yours, I’m hopeful mine will be on song too.

I’m not running an Emerald on mine (Link G4Xtreme in its place) but other than that, sounds similar. Mine’s dragged on way too long too.

Can’t fault the quality of the Larini, even after they re-welded a longer tailpipe pair on there, it still looks (and sounds) a beautiful piece of work.

After long 14 month I finally got mine :sunglasses:

Will fit it next week. Does anyone know how loud it is around 6000rpm? My current has 103dB, that was great, however too loud for the road (or the MOT respectively), as well as for the track.

So I hope to go near 98-100dB or so. Will let you know as soon as I have it fitted and my own results :sunglasses:

Had mine fitted for 2 months.Sounds lovely, quality top notch-can’t fault it, maybe revs a little more freely with 2.5 inlet-superb.

I finaly got mine mounted yesterday, I’m very dissatisfied :
the pipes are not centered (matter of centimeters) and are too short. And the silencer could not fit as is, so the mechanic had to move a thermal protection.
I hesitate between wasting my energy with Larini or sell in on the net and replace it with a 2bular.

Got any photos you can post to indicate the issues you have had?

Summat like this…

We had to use a scaffold pole to centre it, essentially that’s just playing with the mount angles though. If it’s too short that could be because you have the Elise and not Exige version (which is longer). The Elise one only just comes out the back of an Exige. The Exige one could be longer but I haven’t really had much discolouring on the bodywork below it due to that.

I love mine. A great compromise between sound, noise level, power and longevity.
