you know what if I wasn’t so skint I’d be going halves
Very nice Dave.
I was at Spa a few months ago in a hired Daruatec R300, however it was very wet on the day and the thing scared the absolute shit out of me. I came off the track very early on in the day (but didn’t hit anything) when I got on the throttle a fraction of a second too early and the car was just gone before I knew it!!! From then on I just hated every moment driving it as I didn’t want to fork out for the excess!!!
I just wish I’d had the chance to try it in the dry… Still, at least I’ve now driven Spa.
What tyres have you got on Dave? I do rather enjoy the tyres Jonny has on his, it all feels very predictable. I’m toying with getting something similar on the S1 for TDs when it’s finished.
Dave is running Avon ZZR which are standard fit on the 620R and work really well, and then he has some wet tyres too.
I’d imagine right this second he’s out there on the ZZRs. Jonny normally runs Avon ZZS on the BAtCats which are a good all rounder and are almost certainly what you drove.
Yea, Jonny’s car will have been on ZZS’s or more likely CR500’s (the previous generation ‘decent in the dry, decent in the wet’ tyre) when you hired it.
ZZR’s are more like proper dry tyres (akin to A048’s etc)… they were actually fairly ok in the wet at Spa too until it REALLY rained and found that they don’t like standing water very much! (cue the 720 down the Kemmel straight!)
Jamie, these cars are MASSIVE fun in the wet… it’s just very different to the Exige… you have to get used to the fact that it’s not going to come around on you as fast as a Lotus does, and then you can just play. Honest, when the rain came at Spa, it brought feelings of ‘WooHoo! - playtime’ as opposed to ‘Uh oh’. I know what you mean though - myself and Ben had a similar experience driving the 620R for the first time in the wet…that thing did scare me.
Yea I had some properly twitchy moments in the rain on the m20 on zzr
Well I was in one of the Bookatrack cars but can’t remember what tyres they were running. They weren’t in too bad a condition but certainly nowhere near new. It was properly wet all day and I found that I couldn’t really accelerate, brake or go round corners!!! To be honest, it made me feel pretty bloody useless However, I reckon if it had been my own car I would have grown a pair and had some fun with it, without worrying so much.
yeah I know that feeling, took me a while to click with one
I think we’ve all had similar experiences Jamie. The dynamics are very different to the Lotus’ we’re all used to. The car moves around a lot more especially in the wet, I’ve said it before but it like the relationship between input and output is turned up to 11. Once you build confidence about the car moving around and stop fighting it then I think there is enormous fun to be had in circuit. I was pretty much sold one rainy evening with DaveP in an R300 last summer, just awesome laugh out loud fun
Oh and yes 620R in standing water was properly terrifying!!
