standard s1 exige how to run it rich . any help please thanks
What are you trying to do here? Why do you want to run it rich?

pops and bangs on over-run I think.
lol, oh ok.
Well if you have an emerald it easy.
Standard ECU, you just gonna make your car run crap. Pops and bang are often absorbed by the exhaust, you would be better off having a less restrictive exhaust / backbox on it.

Tricky already has changed the exhaust etc - he bought my old Janspeed off me which used to pop and bang all day long on mine when it warm.
Mind you i was running the 190 ECu which I don’t believe tricky has. He’s on the standard 177 ecu.
i would love to try the different ecu but is there any other things that would need changing. anyone shed any light on that?. yes its to run rich not lean which i understand is worse to run lean. i just want it to run a little richer so that now i have con’s janspeeed on and a decat pipe on i can get those pops and bangs back.
Why have you got 2 identical threads running for this?

Mate I think one thread is for the ‘Pop’ and the other for the ‘bang’!!!
Nice one Pete
As you’ve got an Emerald/verniers, could you possibly enlighten Tricky as to the benefits etc - ta. Unfortunately, I didn’t get round to doing that with my K series, before I decided upon the Honda, & I’m sure that your first hand experience will help Tricky in his dilemma.
G’day Tricky!
I DO know what you mean by the ‘pops and bangs’!!! That IS part of the character of the VHPD and I must admit it was a big bit of the ‘I must have the S1 Exige’!!!
To be honest, I was really happy with mine… it had the 190 ‘kit’ on, but never felt as I thought 190 should… in fact it felt slower than my Elise 160 that I sold to move up to the Exige!
I put the car on Dave Walkers RR and it was only making 179 BHP!!! Yikes!!! That together with starting issues, the ‘stuck at 2000 rpm idle’ intermittant problem, plus 170 miles on a tank, I thought that the Emerald was a great move!
NOT cheap however, but worth every penny. Once it was fitted the car went straight to 189 BHP, and was MUCH smoother and eager to rev! BUT the pops and bangs were instantly gone. Even though I too have a decat and a Janspeed!
Following a problem with low compression on number 3 pot, the liners and rings were replaced and at the same time DVA did a full head port Put te whole lot back on Dave Walkers RR and got 202 BHP! (Should really be making 210 ish like lotusgray’s with a similar set-up though !!)
Since I changed to the Emerald, I have VERY quickly got used to the ‘new’ character of the engine. To be honest, I like it MUCH more now! It is very smooth, easy to tool about town at 30-40 mph in top! (will also pull from there if you wanted to??? (WHY!!!), and comes alive above 5500 to whatever you want to take it to! I keep mine to about 7000, but on the RR it was still producing more and will rev happily to 8000+.
I suppose you could still get pops and bangs with an Emerald if you mapped it as such to not stop fuelling on lifted throttle, but now to make up for it I also get a nice flame out the back when it is hot and wild!
Hope to see you at Donny on the 12th… there will be all sorts for you to compare with!!!
Pete

What cams are you running Pete? Got the Piper 1444’s in mine.
PS. Gutted i cann’t make it on the 12th, is shaping up to being a excellent gathering
1227! Should have gone 1444! They are much better as you know!
Listen… Being ‘Gutted’ is a disease… SO, Go on… take a ‘sikkie’!!! You know it makes sense!

If it was just a case of a sikkie it wouldn’t have been a problem, but i’m actually on holiday, and i wouldn’t be to popular with the other half if i cancelled that
think maybe its a case of trying the 190 ecu and see the difference. how easy is it to do

I wouldn’t even try that without at least using the Lotus 190 cam pulley (it’s hardly perfect, but it’s better than retaing the 177 one). You should also change the thermostat to an 82c one etc, etc.
You’re going to be stuffed at MOT time with the 190, probably even with a catalyser fitted.
so thats not the road to go down at all. what am i to do

Various people, & on more than this forum have told you same “best way” to go about what you want to achieve, & as a bonus improve both the car’s performance, & engine longetivity. I don’t believe that we are all wrong, even though you choose not to listen.
I fear a transfer of this thread must be imminent
oh no im not going against what you say i just dont really understand which is the best way to go with it. i certainly dont choose not to listen.just after the ultimate answer wchich will get the end result. so many different suggestions so hard to understand best way,

For the last time - Emerald/Verniers/Mapping, which is what the others are saying too, if you want to do it sensibly! I presume that you’ve now dis-regarded the spoof leaky manifold suggestion ffs?

You are Simon Scuffham and i claim my ten pounds!
Been on the sauce again Dad?
