How do I make it spit fire?!?

Now then,

In my formative experiences with Exiges (take a bow mhaney), I noted lots of flame on the over run or fluffed gear changes. I took my car for its first night time trip a few days ago and the car in convoy noted no flashes of orange or explosions of blue or white.

Now this may sound juvenile but I fancy a bit of a fanfare from time to time and wonder if my car could safely produce a spectacular like that at all? It’s running a Scholar donk and Emerald ignition, (not to mention a healthy 220 ish bhp K!!) but don’t want to do it any harm. Is it possible to create fireworks and if so, how?

Cheers,
Kurt

Respect !!
It’s all about fun !

I’m so glad I got a response like that, I kind of expected a verbal grab by the ear and shown the door!

Any way to make flames happen?

If you have an Emerald ECU, you can turn on ‘overrun fuelling’ this will give the required amount of flameage!!

Ok Sean, where is it and what do I need to do that…( I have a confession that I’m a bit excited by the prospect)!

You dont want this enabled …

So do I need a lead and a laptop…I like how the info is very forthcoming! I have a laptop, and I have an emerald disc that came with the car, any further advice ( and where my ecu may be located and where to get a lead from would be hugely appreciated). I really need to be lead by the hand to do this job.

Cheers,
Kurt

We are all children at heart, just some of us show it more than others

You need the correct Emerald RS232 lead … its wired differently to a standard one …

If you can make up a lead yourself the pin data is on the Emerald website or you can buy a lead from them …

ECU will be behind the trim panal behind the seats … you never know someone may have left a lead already connected and accessible from the fuse and relay cover …

Your Laptop will need an RS232 ( serial ) port or you will also need to buy a USB to serial adaptor from Emerald ( as theirs works ) or Maplin etc

Ive been using Emerald software recently and it all worked perfect ( thanks to Sean for the MAPs  )

Happy banging!

If You are running a Janspeed make sure you put 400 aside for a new exhaust (or most other brands tbh)
I killed my Janspeed in six months of ownership and emptied my eliseparts one of packing in around another six months

Good advice there Boothy! I think it is a Janspeed, it has an oval tailpipe with one circular opening. I’d prefer an exhaust with 2 round pipes to be honest so this may be the only excuse I need to change it!

Those leads aren’t cheap are they?!? (“tight midlands chap” mode off)

Hi Kurt,

Do you have a multi map Emerald (M3D I think)? If not I would recommend an upgrade, as this will allow 3 maps to be stored, and you can switch between them on the fly. It is not too much to upgrade, and it will allow you to store an ‘over fuel’ map which you can switch on when you want it (and not damage the exhuast too much).

If you already have this, then there should be a switch mounted in the car somewhere (under the steering wheel cover or between the seats are the usual places).

I have this installed, and got Dave Walker to give me three maps - ‘performance’, ‘economy’ and ‘tunnel’ (lots of bangs, flame, etc on every lift off ).

I totally endorse this course of action Kurt - happy flaming!

Cheers,

Clive.

Have you checked earlier advice - that a cable may be plugged in already and left behind the panel?

Sounds like a recipe for blowing a gasket, to me

Are there any likely ill-effects(even if not used all the time)?

Good news! I’ve located the ECU though it is impossible to reach though there is a lead to it which has a USB end on it. Can I literally plug this into a laptop and see what happens? Is there anything I need to do first, ie engine running or ignition on?? Do I need to run the little usb to RS232 adaptor disc in the laptop first?

Kurt

The cd will have the emerald software on it - you’ll need that to connect to the ecu. Windows should plug and play with the usb adapter.
If it was me I’d save a copy of the map/maps onto your laptop for future use. Always good to have a copy should anything happen

Kurt

is this for your benefit or your followers?

Haha Simon, I’ve not reached Pied Piper status just yet!

I think this is for both me and them in all seriousness, Ijust want a bit more ceremony for a little while (I assumed, wrongly, that the car would do this as a matter of course when I bought it). I’m very happy to get it out of my system and then revert back to flameless progression.

Good advice from all, I’ll see what happens tomorrow when I plug in to it.
