JoeCould you remind me please - i think i read it before on this BBS but can’t find it again - why the K20A is the best choice and whats the advantage over the S2000 engine?
I’m confident that the F20C from the S-2000 will prove to be the better engine for all out competition in the near future, when I get it mated to the K20A’s transverse gearbox, but for road use or track days the K20A is the better choice. Reason? Torque! The K20A uses Honda’s new i-VTEC cam phasing system, that continually phase shifts the intake cam by as much as 50 crankshaft degrees to optimise torque production. It also serves to smooth the transition into VTEC mode, to the point it’s nearly seamless. The K20A pulls hard right from the bottom, whereas, the F20C by contrast, still uses just VTEC lobe switching, so it’s more explosive in its power delivery, right up to 9,000 RPM. We’re working on a K22A configuration already that will make over 200 lb ft of torque, and still rev past 8,500 with complete reliability.Cheers,Joe
thanks Joe
Joe,What are my sequential box options with the Honda lump?Bob
Beto,Several. Hewland and Xtrac both make 6 speed sequential gearboxes designed to be used transversely, and the Xtrac is being used in the Civic Type R in the BTCC, so even the bellhousing is an off the shelf item. Off the shelf, but certainly not cheap, plan on spending about 14,000 Pounds. I know of someone in England who’s making a dog-ring 6 speed sequential gearset that will drop into the K20A trans case, and have heard of someone in Australia who’s doing the same thing. The UK setup is going for 5,700 Quid, and I’m told the down under setup is substantially less, but exactly how much less I’m not sure of yet, friend of mine is investigating that one now. Something you may find interesting, the new Acura TSX that’s coming out later this month is coming standard with a Magnesium gearbox case. I’ve done a test fitting, and the K24A engine has an identical bolt pattern to the K20A, so we can have a Magnesium cased 6 speed sequential gearbox for far less than the Aluminum cased Xtrac item. Longevity being the only issue left to see.Let me know if you’re interested.Take care,Joe
so, is this conversion popular in the UK? I import honda engines from Japan once in a while, going to do another one soon but which ones shall I stock up?
basically B16B/B18C/K20A/F20C (or even B16A/B16A2/H22A/C30A) they all goes for around the same price, should be able to sell for 2000 to 3000 pounds depends on what comes with them.
I believe the converstaion kits available in the UK all use the K20A (from the Civic Type-R). Here I think they kick out 197bhp but I believe the Jap ones are about 10% more.
If I do this next year I’d be looking for a Jap one, ideally with about 240 reliable bhp.
