Honda/Audi

as scuffers has often said - its the installed weight that matters

Exactly

Oh totally agree, installed weight is obviously what matters. Mine hasn’t got much on it that doesn’t need to be there.

Yes Pesky, with all of the gubbins on it.

But like I said, don’t want to start a war, just stating what my scales have told me, to correct the post above.

the size of the intercooler thats going on mine will add a few kg’s but it should look nice. I would be interested in how heavy my car is whens its finished. Maybe you’ll let me put it on your scales sean as i dont have technical bits like that.

Thought I better clarify, I mean an SC Honda engine and box is heavier than an audi turbo engine and box.

Have you gone for the 5 speed box? That is lighter than a PG1 and with a lightweight flywheel should save nearly 20kg over the 6 speed box with a std flywheel. At least that’s what Dave (MADDOG) said when he was doing his.

No probs at all, matey, just genuinely interested. Any chance you could post the comparative Audi/Honda weights you’re using, & what you’ve done to lighten yours, & the weight reduction eg flywheel, 5 speed box etc etc

Keep up the good work, Sean & Burt

Obvious question to Sean. Can I ask what the weight difference is between your K and the Audi on the scales ? Just really interested and we might actually get an answer this time.

OK, here goes, Below are my weight findings, measured by me on my Rebco corner weight scales, no bull [censored].

2 litre Honda VTEC with all ancilaries that would be used in a Lotus conversion (no air con), standard exhaust and inlet manifold, standard flywheel, clutch and gearbox including starter motor and jack shaft: 198kg

Remember this doesn’t include a super charger, which I think I was told is either 7 or 17kg???

VHPD with all ancilaries, light weight flywheel and clutch, Quaife 6 speed box, no exhaust manifold: 151kg

Audi 1.8 20v with all ancilaries, inlet and exhaust manifolds, turbo, 5 speed flywheel and clutch and 5 speed gearbox: 176kg

Obviously to this needs to be added the charge cooler, charge cooler rad, pump, 6 metres of pipework and the water reserviour and 7 litrs of water which weighs: 18kg

Make of that what you will.

Sean…

Thanks Sean

Sean assuming that the k and audi are actual weights off your scales but is the honda also. just how many different engines you got

The Honda engine was weighed on my scales at a friend of mines workshop. It was actually a Honda engine that I sourced for Russ a year or so ago and it was weighed before I loaded it in my van and drove it oooop north

Thats as maybe but you would see a different picture if you factored your weight into the equation.

Controversial mode /on

Maybe this will finally dispel the myth that 300 BHP Audi’s are heavier than SC Honda’s ?

I know Sean’s is a 5 speeder but he does have a chargecooler set up which a good bit heavier than the standard intercooler arrangement.

Your heavier than me “Fat Boy”

Possibly

eg Honda conversions don’t use the standard exhaust manifold.

All pretty academic, cos they’re both friggin’ fast, but interesting nonetheless

In reply to Bernard, yeah hopefully people won’t rule out the Audi on weight grounds.

The 6 speed box is about 15 kg’s heavier than the 5 speed and the 6 speeders flywheel and clutch adds about another 20kg’s as its one of those dual mass things, I could not believe how heavy it was when I unbolted it.

Sean…

Can’t argue with that at all - hope more will join you in the LOT series next year

OK - thats me corrected…

cheers for the detail on the weights

Yeah but I was pregnant at the time.

Bernard - what’s the pros and cons of the 5 vs 6 speed boxes - other than the large weight difference with the required ancilliaries bolted on.

What do most people go for and does it just depend on whether they are racing, tracking or using mainly on the road??
