Hello!

I’ll get us a test site up and running. We can decide then.

ade it took me a bit of finding but if you hit the red circle to the left of the post name it jumps to where you left off

See the red circle to the left of the Adventures? That will jump to the last point that I read on that thread …

Hi all, you might have noticed a small ( well 2h ) outage. I have been getting ready to port to nodebb but we have some database corruption on this install so I reverted. I am not going to get us upto 3.2.8 from 3.2.7 in the short term

I have just dumped the sql from here , setup a new xenforo1 server and am importing this data into xenforo1.

Ill then test that converted import into nodebb.

The import from phpbb to xen1 went well ( xenforo 2 is latest but I cant jump from phpbb to xf2 )

Using bigdump now to upload my local sql copy of the xenforo 1 that I imported from the phpbb3.

Funny thing is if this works no one will be reading these messages

This is being a pain. It wont import from phpbb3 or xenforo1 or 2.

I have it imported into xenforo 2 mind

Ok guys, in a nutshell after 10h+ of my time ( a seriously experienced nginx / wintel / vmware guy ) I can confirm that I dont think NodeBB is ready for us yet.

Its too unreliable. And not unreliable in a good way.

I fought with it all the way. Initial install was a breeze. Then importing from phpbb , or xenforo was a nightmare.

I got it right upto the point where we had all the users in, and around 80% of the data migrated and BANG. It sank itself.

I havent discounted NodeBB 100% yet, but Ill wait for some more milestone releases before I venture out again to get it working.

Back to the drawing board for now I feel.

I have started again at looking at the software for us.

NodeBB is off my list until it becomes mature. Shame as I found it very impressive
Flarum looks excellent ( https://discuss.flarum.org/ ) and is free
Discourse is free ( https://meta.discourse.org/ ) but doesnt look as good
Xenforo2 is paid, but very good. I use it over on turboRenault.co.uk but I am not sure its what we need here on exiges.com

Ill keep you all in the loop and my apologies for the extended outage today.

The point I was trying to make is it works brilliantly on here, and I’d like not to lose that function

Thanks,Andy for your hard work. As others have said, I’m content with what we have but happy to move on if you can sort it

I’m not seeing anything wrong with phpbb, so not sure why you see a need to (try to) change.
I doubt more modern software will bring in more users
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

My two penn’orth:

If the current board works and doesn’t have any technical or security problems, then keep it as present, with small refinements that are beneficial (eg. the ‘last post’ red circle, etc).

Something I find frustrating is changes for the sake of (eBay being a master at this…) where there’s no actual improvement in functionality, but the layout/graphics/design changes. This just results in:

a) Taking longer to carry out a particular task, at least until the new layout is learned
b) Links that don’t work or go to somewhere other than where they should
c) Web pages being ‘helpful’…

Hope that helps!

Thanks for hard work Andy.

Stay as is or change - I will go with the flow

All feedback is good feedback.

There are security issues which are patched so Ill keep on top of those.
Ill do an offline restore to flarum because I think that could be a good thing for us.
The software that we are based on is free and open source so developments are glacial. Whilst I appreciate that we are all resistant to change I think we need to acknowledge that we need to get some s3 in here and fast!

Hi guys,
This is the avenue I would like to explore. I have exported the database from here and put it onto a small WAMP stack I have ( thing a baby webserver ) its not optimised in any way. Its literally a WAMP out of the box so its a little slow.

Few screens :

I will just reiterated. Nothing is set in stone, I am just exploring avenues. This isnt a final decision or a final design. Its designed to get people talking and trying to shape our future

The order of the pictures has come out a little strange …

Video coming up

Video is better , more fluid. Other than the bit where I havent got the tags ( think sections ) setup correctly yet …

Exiges com test deployment - YouTube

I really like that Andy, I’d be happy to change.

Loved the video. And the suggestion that only the best people own S2s😳.
As for the site update, the technical terms baffle me but the search facility looks a great improvement on the current system. I’d say “ go for it”.

If anyone is remotely interested I have created a dummy site on a domain I have. No content as I dont want it used as a archive.
