Im looking to buy a HQ HD car cam for the old mans F1 , Hes having a blade made like the old BBC ones to fit it all in , we have been using a 4kam DVR system but its not HD and the quality is not that great , im not bothered about GPS/gauges overlay but want proper HD that can be played on a big screen . Thought i would ask you track monkeys before looking.
Just swapped out my kit from RF Concepts bullet cams recording onto digital tape to a GoPro HD.
The difference is amazing.
It’s very simple to setup, easy to use and very convenient with footage recording to SD cards.
As a bonus, it takes very interesting stills with the widescreen setting.
The only downside I can see is having enough hard drive space to store the footage & having a computer fast enough to deal with the output file sizes.
I have a go pro … non hd tho and the sound is crap.(the mic saturates with loud noise)
My professional flying buddy has a hd go pro and still overlays sound tracks to his videos cos the sound is not to his liking . Can you try one before you buy ?
GoPro HD - excellent.
The mic needs to be external really as the blade sits on top of the engine cover plus it will need a to be a bullet cam to fit the blade , has anyone got some HD footage I can check the quality out ?
Pic of the blade :
Are you getting any issues regarding over exposure ? I’m assuming you’re using it from inside between the seats ? I have a nice bullet cam but it over exposes the view out of the windscreen since the interior of the car is mainly dark…

Speak to the guys at Dogcam (Mark I think), details on their website clicky .
i) He seemed very knowledgeable
ii) He said they’d do an exiges.com discount
iii) Mark drives a Lotus.
I was about to buy a GoPro or an HDMax, and still will do at some point if you speak to him!
Thanks , will give them a call , funny enough I was looking at this on there website : http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/POV.HD.html
Yup that looks to be a pretty good bit of kit that could be installed exactly how you envisaged. I’m sure Dogcam would love to help with a project like that!
I see also that GoPro have launched their 3D kit that allows two GoPro HD cams to be mated together. I might try and get my employer to invest in some to ‘research’ their use in Motorsport applications
Mate has a mini DogCam, excellent bit of kit…he haggled a got a mount FOC too at Autosport!
Trouble with the gopro is it’s very flat and square so would be troublesome to fit into a blade.
have a look and the contour HD cam, same sensor as the gopro hd but in a slimmer package.

but have you seen the actual size of it - it’s tiny. When i open the box i was very pleasantly surprised - i was expecting something much bigger.
Size of camera (excluding waterproof case) is approx 60mm x 40mm x 30mm
oh yeah dont get me wrong I love the gopro, just I imagined most of these blade cameras are like the cricket ones, point up into a mirror. So a lipstick shape is more useful.
Looking at the pic posted above there seems to be quite alot of room.
Thanks for the advice , just waiting on the blade dimensions to chose a setup , i will post some clips up on its next outing at the end of May , hopefully in proper HD
Where does one air such a fantastic vehicle? I would love to have a look-see if its running anywhere…
It was at Donny last sunday at a truck do with a few other F1s. Hes done Goodwood FOS a few times in this car and and a JPS and a 612 Fez.
He did race in TGP but now just Demos but it takes him all over Europe .
Oh and he’s doing a street race in Denmark in a few weeks then on to the Nurburgring at the end of the month .
Good luck and let us know what you go with in the end - and where you post the output videos.
Have been looking into this myself, a friend of mine who has previously owned a GoPro (didnt say if it was a HD one) rates this as far superior:
The 1080p one, apparently has a remote mic too.
