Group buy on discounted ECU reflashes

Lovin this thread…cos I couldn’t give a toss!

Keep it up folks, great to have summat amusing to read now that SpecialK has dissappeared up his own back passge

No offence meant, just commenting from my own peculiar personal perspective

The only other way to tune is to use a standalone ECU like EFI which are pretty expensive (like $3k). CharlieX has the reputation and proven history of tuning hundreds/possibly thousands of Elises/Exiges/2-11’s. He’s had a monopoly and his reputation means that folk with Bemani’s, SP-K’s and even Komo-tec conversions have asked for his assistance. 1200 for a Gotham is a bargain to go from 218bhp to 245bhp with a tonne more mid-range torque - its not like 1200 is being robbed for what you get.

Competition only benefits us the consumers but even us consumers need all the facts on the table otherwise we loose out when things go wrong (like it did for many folk a few years ago searching for aftermarket kits for the Elise/Exige).

I work in IT but I’m not exactly an expert in cracking ECU’s, I’d imagine you’d:

  • First need to write a program to communicate with the ECU
  • Download/Decrypt the contents of the ECU
  • Figure out which contents of the ECU relate to which parameters you need to play with to tune
  • Modify the content/parameters of the ECU in real-time so you can play with the map on a dyno
  • Flash the ECU permanently with the new content/parameters you’ve tweaked so that they aren’t lost when the ECU is switched off.
  • Do all of the above for each Lotus ECU variation from 2004 to present along with all the map updates Lotus release through dealer flashes.

Pesky - What type of comment is that?

If you’d spent thousands on an aftermarket kit that didn’t work for your car you would give a toss? What’s wrong with explaining a few facts? Do you have an aftermarket supercharger?

I already said on SELOC if you want a lower cam change or optimisation for induction/exhaust buy it from Hangar111…

You perhaps don’t know/remember me via the internet, although we’ve met/chatted face to face numerous times over the years at Donington Show/race meetings. I have the greatest respect for you, Wayne & team, & the services Sinclaires provide (& would not hesitate to be a customer if I didn’t live “Oop North”), but as an S1 Exige owner with a Honda s/c installation, I genuinely don’t have any personal interest in S2/Toyota stuff.

Hope that puts my earlier comment into context - the final paragraph was very relevant!

Blacktoy is not Gill? I am confused.
Clearly though an S1 owner wont have an interest, just like I dont really read the S1 section on here apart from the odd quick skim. But owning as pretty heavily modified S1 exige if this was relivent to your car I bet you would be interested

Blacktoy/Gill - reading earlier posts (eg yesterday @ 3.49pm) I thought they were the same person, but perhaps they’re not, so apologies…

TBH, as my car (& many others with similar spec)are proven over many road/track miles, there is very little nowadays in the S1 section which grabs my interest. My car handles like a dream, stops well, & has more than adequate performance/speed for my meagre talent. I’m not interested in squeezing the last ounce of performance out of it (eg charge cooling), although enjoy reading about others’ experiences, especially those who know how to exploit their car’s potential. And there perhaps lies my amusement with this & similar threads

Although Tony may of had his thread a tad hijacked at least a discussion on this subject can take place in a proper manner rather than turning into a slanging match. Im finding the whole thing very interesting Rob, then again I know very little about it. Blacktoy is making sense as is Boothy, its all good stuff.

But having said that it wouldnt be the same without you…LSD was genius

Tony not sure if I’ve asked but you’re welcome to jump in my car with the GT Spec on Monday evening at Donny?

Jonny et al - please don’t let my amusement put you guys off, or dissuade you from carrying on the debate - it is a good one, & is of course being carried out in a respectful manner (which I believe is very important on exiges.com).

Those who know me, will hopefully realise that some things are said with tongue in cheek…

Uncle Pesky in ‘being nice’ shocker! Are you ill? Bugg*r off until your better!

Blimey, you don’t look at the forum overnight and this discussion has got huge.
(Mr Pesky always adds a level of humour to every thread somehow; well done)
It is quite interesting for me as I looked at all the kits\upgrades available for my car before I went and got stuff together. I only ever discounted suppliers based on certain elements of their kits, oddly none was due to ECU tuning as a primary concern. I started to prod Sincs to make sure they got the abilities to carry out custom tunes for ECUs as that was what I wanted to create the car I have now, I knew Charlie in the US could supply it but these agreements take time.
I was the first person to reap the benefits of custom mapping in the UK and can now do what I want to my car, the obvious downsides are cost for each mod requires a new custom map. My maps are used by anyone who has the same mods but is unable to deliver the car for a custom tune for example the Gotham tunes where done on my car in the UK.
God I’m not sure where my post is going, but in the long run if you want custom it costs but you do get flexibility in the future. If you want a bolt on and reflash based upgrade got to H111 as they deliver a good product at a reasonable price.
What I do say however is that competition is a good thing, it drives down prices and increases options so I say bring it on to the other tuners, it might not move where I go as I am kind of tied to Sincs now but we do need choice from reputable suppliers like H111 etc.
Well I’ve blathered on for a while someone elses chance to cut me down and flame me.

and just like Pesky I like my talent enhancing mods  but I appear to have reached the level where I just get scared…

So… anyone else want a quick flash?

Nice to know people on here are reasonable and intelligent enough to recognise what suppliers are offering!

As an aside. Although I’m definately going for a basic reflash with H111 at the moment, in the future, I might, just might end up with the Gotham NA tune. I’ve already got the induction and exhaust so all I’d want would be a manifold and sports CAT plus tune. I’ve looked at the figures between the basic NA and the basic Katana and pound for pound the NA kit looks bloody good value.

Whats interesting is that the % increase both in HP and torque are within .1% of each other at every point on each tune. I wasn’t expecting that. I assume it is right?

Sorry Tony daft moment what’s the Ronin NA? This a tune done with induction and exhaust mods where the Katana is that plus a supercharger…kind of thing. So is the the Hanger111 GT Spec something similar to the Ronin NA? Totally lost sorry.

The Ronin NA kit is(AFAIK), induction (K&N), a custom manifold (based on Franks), a decat or sports cat and exhaust plus a custom map.

Similar in some respects to the H111 but the custom map does seem to really extract some extra power in the mid range.

Cost seems to be around the 12-1500 mark.

Do you have any figures to hand for your car with the GT tune? Be interesting to see a comparison.

is that 1200 - 1500 inc everything? Manifold, induction, cat, fitting, custom map etc? It seems good value if it is.
Sadly sinclaire is a hell of a trip for me and as i have a forge intercooler afaik i would need a custom map. We need more options oop north.
To answer Pesky, I have no idea how to fully exploit the missus either but i find a new handbag every once in a while acts as a perfect talent enhancer

The Ronin N/A kit seems to be a lot of gain for just an exhaust and intake change (+ remap). Bloody good value if it is true.
