group buy Moroso sump

oh. anyone have an oil pressure gauge? Will tell you immediately if there are any oil starvation probs.

I’ve got a gauge in my car and haven’t seen any problems, even flat through the banking at Rockingham. But then I’m not a driving god I was going to get an accusump but since getting the gauge I’ve decided to hold onto the cash.

I’d heard that the problem was the oil wouldn’t drain back from the head fast enough, and therefore just baffling the pan wouldn’t help, you need extra oil somewhere, hence the accusump, or the extra capacity of the Moroso. But given that I probably heard that on a less respected internet forum I’m not sure what its worth.

I don’t know any specifics about the Yota lump, but I do know what oil starvation can do. It would only take a fraction of a second of the oil pump sucking air to do damage to the main and big end bearings. Lets not forget guys that th eoil layer here is very thin and it is the pressure of that oil that keeps the layer from braking down.

My old standard VHPD had a small baffle in it and when looking back at my data logging I could see that the oil pressure dropped in the corners. I never noticed it on the gauge as I guess I was too busy looking where I was going.

I would say a baffled sump is a no brainer and is a lot cheaper than a new crank and or rods.

On the oil draining back from the head, this is an issue on standard K’s, one way round this is to fit a vent tube from the crank case to the head, don’t know if this is possible to do easily on the yota engine, but would be worth looking into.

I must admit I am shocked by the slow take up of some thing which could save your engine on a track day.

there must be a few track day S2 here or is Pesky right and 85% of S2 owners are indeed all hairdressers !!!

Nah, S2 owners just happen to have the more reliable model

If I didn’t already have one, I’d be up for it. I’ve got a baffled oilsump with trap doors.

I can add though that oil starvation is something that should be taken very seriously.

Do we know how many hours the dealers charge for changing the sump? I need to equate it into my costing, no point in buying if I can’t afford to have it fitted

I’m interested however I am still in the warranty period, do I need this yet?

If I have it fitted will Lotus use it as a reason to deny warranty claims?

Who is knowledgdeable enough to fit it (close to london) as it took a well known essex garage 2 hours to do a cat swap for my car due to unfamilarity with the car?

Where near London are you? I am in Sunny Southend and have a very good local workshop that does all my work…
I am interested in what the approx hours will be before I commit to buy one then find it is a 10hour job to fit for some obscure reason

its a simple job.

on a ramp its. a few bolts to take the unside off, then the sump is right there.

you will have to factor in the cost of new oil and also get some oil pan seal from toyota.

should be 2 hours and best to do at your next oil change due to having to get to the filter any way.

so if you take your oil change into account then they should only charge you 1/2 and hour extra to swap sumps over.

Cool thanks for the info, stick me down for one, its got to be worth having, and much cheaper and simpler solution than the accusump…

Almost everything we do to our cars is designed to make them quicker round a corner whether its lowering the car, getting the geo done, fitting nitrons or doing an instruction day. If a std car can have problems, any of the above just brings us closer to the danger point. A sump with more capacity and baffled seems to address the two main issues and when one considers how much we spend on track days, fuel etc (not to mention the car!) then 300 quid insurance seems a good deal to me…

I think i will go for one, let me have a chat with a mate here in germany and maybe i can make that two…i will confirm in a PM.

Stick me down for one is well provisionally, will check with my dealer that it is warranty safe.

David,
I have already got one fitted, otherwise I would not think twice of adding my name to the list.

Regards,

David

OK thats 6 inc me

4 more needed.

I am sure I could get the rest at the Exiges track day but because of the 9-11 week wait for build and shipping I would still like to move on this before then.

Pass the word around, Pistonheads has come up with nothing :frowning:

So it looks like I will have to ask the SELOC guys.

Once I have 10 maybe’s I will contact you all again for a 100% yes and 100 payment up front.

Okay I’ll have one. When do I need to get the money by? Surely if we wait say 2 months there will be hundreds of owners joining this group buy.

windage tray --moroso pan | The Lotus Cars Community Check out this thread on elisetalk. The windage tray needs to be removed or trimmed to fit the new pan. Also, the plugs in the extra bung holes are not tightened, and need to be sealed before you loose all your oil.

Now getting a bit scared, this is starting to look like it is not an easy job to fit, why can’t something made for the car just fit without cutting and bending

Splitpin, where did you get yours fitted ?

I’m starting to feel the same. Sinclaires took 2 hours just to change my sports cat for the lotus cat and I have a 2ubular fitted with no backing.
