Gearbox Wanted

Have the people who say the Quaife is “great fun and reliable” actually owned and run one?? I have heard nothing but bad stories. Mine was a complete nightmare.

I’m impressed Andy broke a gear in his Audi box. I think he said it was 5th? Was that the case Andy? In fairness that gearbox had a hard life, for a good few years when it was in my car. Its done well handling well over 400bhp for that long in my opinion.

Just so people know, Andy has the 02J 5 speed twin rail gearbox in his car, not the three rail, 02M six speed box. There are lots of choices with Audi boxes. They do a 6 speed twin rail box as well, called the 02S.

Sean
Yeah it was 5th - and it was Stan who broke it
Actually I think the issue was since we fitted the new turbo we have been getting very high boost and we cant control it so we did quite a few dyno runs on Tuesday in 5th and I guess 2.5 bar every now and then was not doing it any good and we finished it off on Friday with the 2 bar we had for a second or so …
Shit happens and lets face it Tony broke 4th on his Honda last year …

Was Russ driving?

Hope you get it sorted soon Andy, that car has a history of challenging the patience of its keeper eh…

Let me know if you’re planning a date in April,…gagging to get back out in the car again,

I have a 6 speed sequential Quaife in the elise and it’s been fine… great in fact - super fast gear changes and it transformed the car…

BUT…

It was used in a hillclimb car with a mere 220 bhp, not a circuit car… hill climbing does involve dumping the clutch at 5000rpm and spinning the rears, but after that it only gets 30 - 40 secs of ‘thrashing’… no problems though

Donny national on the 26th (Fri) with bookatrack ?

I fancy getting out again soon too !

Damn, I’m in Wolfsburg that week … so relative close but stuck in meetings and anyhow no way to get everything fixed for April sadly anyhow

Enjoy it !

Andy, let me know if I can help out with the gearbox. I don’t mind sourcing you a decent replacement, then I am sure Wayne wouldn’t mind rebuilding it with the LSD form the original box for a few beer tokens. Let me know if I can do anything.

Just had a quick look on e-Bay and there is a CZM at a breakers not to far from me for £95 and another also pretty close for £120. I’m also sure Marc can help us out with one as well.

Wonderful gearbox build thread - deep pockets needed though.

Forget the build thread. Look at the blokes garage!! wish mine was that clean/painted/nice/tidy etc etc etc etc

And ‘hats off to those who swap em out on axle stands’
Totally agree !!

Its prices like this that show that the market is crying out of a solution that allows a tougher standard box to be run, rather than having to pay to have a box specifically built up.
Don’t mind whether its VW, Honda or whatever.

Sean, fantastic mate … Stan will be in touch as he is going to sort out getting car to JSR to get the box pulled.

I have that spare box but getting another for that money is a no brainier !!

No problem Andy, I will have a chat with Marc P tomorrow and see if he has any CZM’s in stock with known mileages etc. If he doesn’t there are a few on ebay that are local to me.

I am seeing Wayne on Saturday, so will ask him about rebuilding the box for you.

Is the spare you have a CZM? You wanna stick with those close ratios and I am pretty sure CZM is the closest.

CZM , EBD and DYN are all the same ratio’s AFAIK

Best get a replacement box anyhow - it makes sense, Marc P did offer at Anglesey so he knows about it.

Will give you a bell later

As per op, I’m too looking for a replacement toyota box. I’m considering simply having 2 boxes, swapping them out and having the one removed rebuilt to do it again later! This gives me chance to inspect the clutch each time too, infact, it might end up lasting about the same time as the gearbox anyway!

What should I expect a rebuild on a toyota box to cost? I’ll then budget that in as part of the seasons consumables.

I live in Kent, work in Cov so can be flexible regarding pickup if anyone has a spare knocking about.

Just done mine.
Costs for rebuild if you sourced a broken box are…
750 to the gearbox builder for labour/bearings/seals etc.
1150 for 3rd +4th gears … SSC/Hollinger
700 ish for LSD + bearings
300 ish for clutch
50 for oil
So around 3K , and that’s doing the swap yourself.

Oh, don’t forget some tranquilisers
Edited to clarify which gears I used.

John, have you gone Jubu 3rd and 4th or just rebuilt it as a standard box?

I do hope that was for Jubu gears as thats alot more than I was expecting. That said, prob wouldnt go for the lsd, clutch should be ok and I have some oil. So providing the standard 3/4th are still holding up I would leave them in there.

Anyone have a spare box?

My story goes …
I was waiting for ‘drexler’ jubu’s to come back into circulation but they never did…
I declined the ‘hangar 111’ jubus as I couldn’t ascertain who was actually making them …
In the end I used SSC Australian gears ‘hollinger’ made…these are imported by TDI
Have I done the right thing ? I hope so but only time will tell…

Jeez , I’m dreading my gearbox going bang , bloody expensive fix .
