Please PM me and let me know if you have a working Toyota gearbox that you would be willing to part with, and if so how much.
Hoping to switch in a new box and get the car back on the road while I decide what to do next. If it’s a standard box then track days will be out of the question, but at least I’ll get some use out of the car while deciding what to do next.
The failed box already had Jubu 3rd and 4th, and at one time final drive. Final drive was straight cut and was doing my head in so was taken out.
Think they now do a semi helical alternative. Hoping that the failure is in the final drive, because if it was the Jubu 3rd that went then there are quite a
few that will need to keep their fingers crossed. Would probably have to drop the power back down a bit if that’s the case.
Fundamentally the car needs to be reliable and I need to be getting the use out of it.
Honda won’t fit …
Will ,speaking to a well respected gearbox builder lately and they don’t think the final drive is a weak point …
Massively unlucky .
Very controversial but were your Jubu gears the earlier or the latter ones ?
Again ,gutted for you
Car was among the very first that had the Jubu gears when the first became available.
Should also add that it has been running with a gearbox oil cooler as well.
Thought that I’d taken all precautions.
Proper gutted for you Will… never heard of a final drive breaking, could it be something to do with the re-fitting of it perhaps after taking the straight cut final drive out ?
I guess you won’t know until it’s out and inspected.
Having never even seen inside a gearbox until I decided to fit an LSD to mine recently, it was a big relief not to hear lots of nasty grinding noises as I drove off the trailer at Anglesey !! (I’d half expected my nice expensive new diff to be mashed to bits as I set off for the first time )
Chin up bud… was great to see you and thanks for the lend of the allen key!
Few pictures of a final drive failure from a Celica. From what I’ve read and from speaking to people before the original gearbox upgrade after 3rd and 4th its the final drive that’s the next weakest link.
We’ll see when the box is off.
Damn Toyota gearbox. Surely it’s possible to produce a reliable fix for this box that will satisfy 90% of us road & track users. Worrying to see this cooled & Jubu’d box break.
