Exige S1 VHPD Alternator

Mine is about knackered & I need to sort a new one, but my bother in law is a mechanic and can get one at cost (I hope). His intial enquiries have not been too successful so far…

What is the std alternator on the S1 VHPD??? Is if different to the normal K series?

Is ther a better one to fit (read a note about Birse on a search - but didn’t sound too good)?

I’ve just got the Lotus part number but I’m not sure of that will help or not.

Cheers

Mark

You/brother in law should be able to get a recon one on exchange from a motor factors. IIIRC I got one for about 80 in 2004.

with the new alternator you should try to get a bigger pulley: it will provide a much longer life

Thanks guys - but is the alternator the same as a normal K Series?

Cheers

Have you considered fixing yours ?

99 per cent of alternator probs are:

1)broken rectifier (purchase new fron auto electrical supplier)

2)faulty diodes (snip out and solder in some new ones…only cost pence)

I’m fed up with mine going. So, I’m going to get a spare, potentially to even swap at the track (SeanB record = 6mins). Or make the rectifier remote (out of the manifold heat) and easier to replace.

Thoughts anybody?

Ian

Wouldn’t it be easier to use a quality heat shield, wrap the manifold and ensure the alternator gets a cold air feed from the ducting to offside air intake.

Mines only gone once in 8 years total and that was maybe 6 years ago. The replacement was about the same cost as Peskys (I think) and available from an ordinary alternator reconditioner on an exchange basis.

Good God I,ve finally cracked it !!!
We just need to reverse these machines round the track to ensure cooling … Makes perfik sense when you think about it …
All our cooling issues cured instantly…
Could catch on as a new class of race ?

OK maybe not the best idea , but , I,ve had a shandy or two tonight… Forgive my brainwave

Good God I,ve finally cracked it !!!

Sounds like you have cracked something

Advice might have been teaching you to sucks eggs but when you are unable to source a bog standard alternator…

Sorry Steve if my post seemed unhelpful (not intended)…

On a serious note …if you/anyone could give me the model/serial numbers of a required alternator then i,m pretty sure I can get you help in finding one.

A family member has ben a core broker / reconditioner for most of his working life and has saved my bacon loads of times…
PM me if you need his number

HTH

Pretty sure the diode has gone on mine - but have sorted a recon for the wek end - will see if I can keep the current one & fix the diodes.

LOL - Lotus wanted 280 for one!!! Part no. A111E6082S

eliseparts.com offer a heatshield for the laternator - sounds like this might be a good idea?

Cheers

I’m planning on trying heat shield, wrap, air hose (been there before, still failed) and a spare (‘carry a spare, you’ll never need it’ theory).

I’ll then look at the dead one and see if it can be easily saved/modified.

Ian

Um, there’s a thought. How hard to wrap a manifold in situ?

Ian

I think you’ve just confirmed the S1’s classic status there

Just found out that the Exige had a new alternator fitted at Peter Smiths but it was back in 2006 by the last owner ---- wait for it…

272 for the alternator & 340 fitting (4 hours) …

WOW!

Mark

4 hours, must have a/c.

160inc for a new one from Eliseparts and should only take a couple of hours if there’s no a/c.

Even with aircon, I don’t think it was too tricky - access after removing wheelarch liner.

Well, they wouldn’t be my knuckles in any event!!

Ha ha … I remember mine going just as I arrived at the ferry on way to Holland.

I called Van Sten and said can you fix it, the sigh from the other end of the phone when I said it was an air con car was priceless

If you have a ramp its easier but I found you needed to move the petrol filler to get the damn thing out through the arch - took me a good 3 hours out the first time …
