Dull VAG 1.8T

I notice in the latest EVO magazine that the Audi conversion is called ‘dull’. This is the article about a 280hp conversion for the S2. I dont undestand why they are calling it dull … any ideas ?

Conflict of interest? The 300+ bhp audi will disappear out of sight compared to the turbo yota. Neither will be dull.

Can you scan and post the article? Do they put the comment in any sort of context? I can only imagine that they mean that the very rapid progress an Audi is capable of comes without the drama of second cams and high revs? Some people love the sounds and “experience” of speed as much as the actual speed itself.

This is the actual quote:

[color:“blue”]At 6995 fitted it’s not cheap, but there are plenty of people out there spending even more money fitting Exiges with Honda i-VTEC motors and dull VAG 1.8T engines, so there’s obviously a market for such a conversion. [/color]

Read that as you want.

I think it’s largely because the guy writing it is a dickhead.

Bernard

I thought they meant dull because it’s too mainstream, not because of the power it produces…aka it’s a van engine

Albeit a very good one

I’m sure with a bit of Brasso the Audi would come up just as shiny as any Honda or Toyota.

I tend to read the bits in EVO, which interest me, over a few weeks - in 10 minute sessions whilst in the bathroom (polite terminology!)

I wouldn’t classify EVO as a w@nk mag, but each to their own I suppose.

Very good Steve - glad you’ve sunk to my level of humour

  • Just don’t sink to his level of debauchery!

Surely you mean rise?

Folks

I think it is more likely that the only experience the writer has of the ‘dull’ 1.8t engine is in some bloated Audi TT turbo-nutter-barge.

Bet he/she has not driven one that goes so fast you barely have time to change gear…

Just like most w@nk@rs who have not actually had sex with a another person, and are comparing their imagination with the real thing, if you get my drift…

Mike! Long time no hear.

Have you just awoken from your winter slumber in time for the start of the Trackday season

I think lapping Donington at 1:15.7 proves it’s no dull engine. That’s what we did at the weekend at the Time Attack event.

Bernard,

Have there been any Audi engines ‘let go’ in a big way yet ??

I heard a rumour that a few had blown up (one at Snetterton?) - hopefully just nasty rumour though ??

Just a rumour I think.

The only one I know about was Mike Lane’s at a Mid Engined Sports car race at Donington in 2005. It melted a piston, possibly due to the wrong plug grade being used.

My N/A one did The valve snaped @ 8500rpm, the motor was rebuilt with better valves after that
